updating version 4.2 to 4.5 problem

Postby blueturtles » Fri Sep 16, 2011 10:22 pm

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble to trying to update the Subsonic software from version 4.2 to 4.5. I have followed the steps that are in the download section regarding the WAR files.

Subsonic is running off of Acer Aspire easyStore H340 with Apache Tomcast 6.0 on a Windows Home Server computer.

Any guidance would be helpful. If I knew what information to look for in the various logs, I would look, but I am fairly new to all this and I am really struggling. I've had the Subsonic software running for about a year or so and I only recently decided to try to update it. And now I am stuck. If you need more information from me please let me know and I will be more than willing to supply what I can.

Thanks, Jon

Why don't you just use the windows installer?
I am running the same hardware as you and it installs no problem at all.
I didnt have 4.2 to start with (4.3 for me) but all the upgrades went smoothly.

Did you set up Subsonic to use the Apache Tomcat software too? I just want to make sure your system is like mine if I decided to use the Windows Installer. Thanks for the information and I am willing to give it a try as long as I don't screw anything up.

No I didn't install Tomcat as have no need but I cant see why it cannot coexist with jetty if you need to.
If you back-up your subsonic folder 1st I cannot see what can go wrong (Famous last words)

Alight, here is a little more information regarding my situation, I have been able to 'install' version 4.5, HOWEVER, if I reboot the server, Subsonic reverts back to version 4.2?

Here is what I have done to get it to install:
1. stopped the subsonic service
2. stopped the Tomcat service
3. Removed TOMCAT 6.0/webapps/subsonic.war
4. Removed TOMCAT 6.0/webapps/subsonic
5. Removed TOMCAT 6.0/work
6. Copied the file subsonic.war to TOMCAT 6.0/webapps.
7. Started Tomcat
8. Started subsonic

Information:
Version 4.5 (build 2384) – August 10, 2011
Server Apache Tomcat/6.0.29, java 1.6.0_26, Windows 2003 (116.2 MB / 137.4 MB)

Any thoughts of what I am doing wrong?

Again, thanks for helping out a novice. :)

Cheers, Jon

I just did it, heres how not sure if I have to many steps but it worked for me.
1. Stop and exit apache
2. When you think you done your probably not, go to task manager and under processes, look for tomcat....its probably still running.....end the task
3. go to web apps stick in the war file, start apache should make a subsonic folder.
4. do steps 1 and 2 again
5. romeve root folder, rename subsonic folder as ROOT, and subsonic.war as ROOT.war (most of which you know alrady)
6. Open Java go to settings, then delete files.
7. Close out of everything and start apache, you should be good to go.
FYI i'm as much of a noob as you lol

From one novice to another, thank you for your tips and suggestions. I will give it a try and will report back (might be a day or two, but I promise to get back and let you know how things turned out).

Robandcathy,

As promised, here is my report: your instructions worked like a charm. I think what was holding me up was not deleting/ clearing the Java files, but I can't say for sure because I am still getting my feet wet with all of this. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my troubles.

Cheers!

By the way, out of curiosity, what instructions did you follow to install it on your version of Windows Server?

Well, I think I spoke too soon. The issue has re-surfaced and I am back to using version 4.2. Still not sure what is going on. Once again, I am a novice with all this so any thoughts or direction would be greatly welcome.

Cheers!!

UPDATE: I never solved the original issue when updating 4.2.to 4.5 when using the Tomcat server. Instead, I installed a 4.5 stand alone version and everything is working great.

Cheers to all of you who helped with suggestions and answers.
