[Solved]Video Transcoding Help Request

Postby woodbtreasures » Mon Sep 19, 2011 9:56 pm

First of all, I know that all of you who know what you're doing absolutely hate these types of posts. For that I am sorry, but my results are horrible and I don't even really know what to do to try to fix it. Secondly, I will fully admit that a large part of the problem may very well be my hardware. I fully intend to upgrade the Celeron to a Pentium D here shortly, but I don't think it's the whole problem. All settings are default except for increasing the memory limit to 500 in a hope that it would make some sort of difference.

    <-------------------------Subsonic Help Request---------------------->
Problem Description: I can't get any movies to stream watchably, it works it's just too pixelated no matter what my Kbps settings are. The files have been encoded to Apple TV2 m4v via handbrake. I also really want to know how to just stream video_ts files. I have over 60 of my dvd's ripped this way and I don't really want to have to convert them all over to m4v if possible.
Troubleshooting Steps: I haven't tried anything because I don't know where to start...
Playback Application and version: Standard Subsonic Web Interface
    Subsonic Version: 4.5 (build 2385) – August 11, 2011
    Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_18, Windows 7 (34.4 MB / 54.3 MB)
Hardware Platform: Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit on Intel Celeron 3.2Ghz processor with 2 Gb DDR2 ram with integrated graphics and sound.
Router: Brand New Cisco Linksys E4200 Dual Band N 300+350
    Java Memory Limit: 500mb

    Link to my server linot.subsonic.org

Thanks in advance for your help. All I ask is to please really tell me what to do. I have no general knowledge of trascoding so just telling me to do something isn't going to get me anywhere...I need for you to please tell me how.
    -Jeremy

I forgot to note above that my connections speeds according to speedtest.net are sitting at 6.86 Mbps as of last test and always above 4Mbps.

Also as another side note the picture quality looks just fine when using these same video files over airplay to an apple TV 2 in another room, though in that situation it's simply streaming the video with no transcoding being performed.

If there is any other info needed to help diagnose I will happily provide.

If the m4v files are not drm protected then they should play in JW Player without transcoding.
Disable the transcoding for m4v in settings/transcoding and see if that improves things.

As for your ts files I cannot help but we do have some video experts on the forum or you could try a forum search.

I use SS for music and so all my videos in SS are music vids and all converted to flv.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Thank you! That was a dramatic first step in the right direction as at least the ones that I have encoded will play. If nothing else I guess I can use this as a stop-gap until I have some decent hardware for encoding. The only down side is that it loads the entire movie into the player before it starts, so there is a pretty good delay at the beginning.

If someone could break down video_ts streaming for me I would be greatly appreciative. I have searched but yet to come up with a real answer. I thiink that one of my biggest issues with streaming video_ts files is that when I try to click on the video file in subsonic it opens up and shows it an empty folder like it doesn't see the .vob's in there.

Dude I feel like a complete jackass but thank you so much. That thread occurred after the last time I had looked trying to get this figured out, so I never saw it. Though it's still pixelated, the video quality is surprisingly good for what I'm using as a server (this POS was out of date before we bought it for a school emergency from Wal-mart lol).

Anyhow, once again thank you very much. As a note to anyone else who may be interested in doing this, realize that you have to drill down through your folder structure a few layers further and then click on each vob in order for the entire movie to play, and there is appearantly no way yet to start the movie from a set time. But knowing that I don't have to encode my entire movie collection is just flat freaking awesome!!
