Subsonic for Logitech's Revue/Honeycomb

Postby Aqualung » Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:15 pm

I take it that my failing to make myself clear is what led to having my previous thread on the same subject deleted, so I am reiterating my feature request here, in very clear terms: I would like to see Subsonic ported to Logitech's Revue, especially since Revue will be getting Honeycomb soon. Now, I probably should emphasize that I am looking to stream music from the Revue, not just use it as a client. I need, in other words, to use my Revue as a media server.

Alright, so it looks like Honeycomb is finally here. Any (happy) thoughts on porting Subsonic (at least the server side) to Revue/Honeycomb?

I just sideloaded the current Subsonic Android client and verified that it works on the Logitech Revue.

Thank you, though what Revue needs is the server side of Subsonic.

I'm currently looking at the Subsonic application on the Revue, in order for it to be relatively useful it needs a significant UI overhaul. I'm currently working on that but don't expect any updates soon since I'm still starting off.

The biggest problem that I've identified is Video, and how Subsonic is currently inadequate to handle video well. There are two approaches to make video work on the Revue. The first one is to stream the raw video files, without any transcoding. This is what the Logitech Media Player does, and it works best. The Revue handles 720p video great this way, but there's no hope for subtitles with this method.

The other option is to use a custom Flash video player (which is not too hard to do), and somehow allow the Subsonic client to change the transcoding settings on the server in order to support subtitles and other player settings. I've had some performance issues playing Flash video with Subsonic, but I think it might be an issue with the JWPlayer that comes with Subsonic, since YouTube and other HD content plays well in other sites.

I'd like to get some feedback on this guys, since the best option isn't immediately obvious to me.

As nice as direct streaming is nice. I think transcoding is a must. Because the revue does not support enough formats.
The revue dropped mpeg2 decoding. So even DVD vobs won't play either.
All of my videos are MKV codec VP8, vorbis. But because there not *.webm and i include an extra audio track. The revue will not play them.

Not to mention the subtitles are really nice as well.

Thanks

Having the Revue stream video sounds good, no doubt; I, however, was hoping to get it to stream (with or w/o transcoding) my huge .flac collection to my Android devices--which, I imagine, is a much more reachable goal. How about getting started on this one first? :)

At any rate, any move toward getting the Revue stream anything is welcome. Many thanks for looking into this.

Alright folks, so is this going anywhere? Looks like GoogleTV devices are poised to flood the market soon, and having a Subsonic server tailored to serve media from GoogleTV would give Subsonic a whole new market with a promising future...

Also interested in a good client app for the Logitec Revue/GoogleTV. Willing to chip in $10, if it will help!
