Is it possible to install Subsonic to My Book Live?

Postby oaf » Mon Feb 21, 2011 7:16 pm

Hello...
I'm considering to install Subsonic to MBL. Are there any possible problems?

Thank you in advance.

Actually I've done it and Subsonic works there.
Not so fast but enough to stream inside network.
In case of outside... some gaps appeared. So I need to know how to optmize
the data flow...

The best way to optimize performance is to use media that doesn't require any transcoding.

I'll include your successful installation in the unofficial NAS compatibility list

OK. I've used Subsonic Debian version. And slightly renew the transcoders which were existed on MLB. Actually it works rather good. With transcoding from FLAC to MP3. But it should be tracks. Some problems were there as I've tried to use big FLAC files as full images of CD.

One more thing. I'm using only small covers (like cover.jpg and folder.jpg)
instead of use the big scans which sometimes provided with albums.

Last... MLB has about 256Mb memory. So I've defined 120M in subsonic settings file. Currently Java for Subsonic eats about 40% of whole memory.

Any particular reason (other than bandwidth) why you'd be transcoding FLACs to mp3s?

Do you have instructions on how to install Subsonic on My Book Live?

There seems to be instructions on other NAS servers, but not this on (and of course this is the on I have).

I saw it can work - just not sure how to do it.

I'll work on a real write up later. But FYI, I just went from the default install of subsonic to having on tomcat and WOW, what a difference in speed. MUCH better.

Oh, and yeah... it definitely can run on the my book live.

Totally agree. Moved from standard install to Tomcat a year ago and haven't looked back.

I have around 15'000 Songs (only mp3) and searching and browsing around with the web gui was a bit slowley, compared to my install on a separated laptop/server. I would like to hear any other experiences?

Questions:
  • Does installing on a tomcat help speed up thinks realy that much (even on a 256mb box like "my book live")?
  • do you run the tomcat behind the default apache werbserver
  • I simlinked the var/subsonic to the storage partition, due the low space on the /, any other pitfalls?
  • there is no wake-on-lan, does subsonic prevent the harddisk to go in sleep mode.. (may I checkout with powertop later...)
  • For me it was very easy to install a) the open java stuff and then b) the default debian packages from subsonic. But I had to compile lame (and if I would use also ffmpeg) manually (the included from the packages didn't worked), any other stuff to compile manual.. whats for example about id3 tag edditing?

bye

This thread has seemingly died. I too would like to install tomcat and subsonic on my newly purchased My Book Live 2tb and was looking for a little instruction. I'm wading through it solo and will post back with what I did assuming I can get it running.

ace518? Did you ever manage to get that howto written?

Anyone at all able to give help on this? I'm stuck using Twonky at the moment which I find to be nowhere near as good as subsonic.

There have been varying degrees of success installing Subsonic on storage devices. I have no specific information regarding the WD Live or any other particular storage device because of the inherent limitations of those devices.

They are designed to handle storage and transfer of data stored on the device. Manufacturer's don't spend more on cpu power for these devices than they need to in order to remain cost competitive in a tight market. As a result they are not designed to meet the additional load of hosting a webserver. Perhaps if you figure out the installation you may get reasonably acceptable performance with music if you don't set up any transcoding, but this isn't the function that the unit was designed to handle.

You'd be much better off with any throw away PC that can be repurposed even if you get a cheap refurb from Tiger direct or an obsolete server from ebay. My fastest server was a used HP workstation I picked up on ebay. It has dual quad core 2.83GHz CPU's 16GB ram and came with 2 - 250GB hard drives in a SOLID steel workstation case for $600. You don't need anywhere near that kind of power unless you wnat to host and transcode blue ray quality video on Subsonic.

Any cheap throw away ebay PC will run circles around an installation on a storage device.

Less than $50.

Add a 2TB hard drive and you've got a Server for less than $200.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-DC780 ... 2ec246fe8f

Core 2 duo 3.0 GHz 2 GB for $60 NO BIDS.

You can get WHS 2011 on Newegg for $50 if you don't want to use Linux for free.

It's so cheap and easy to set up a functional server that works really well with Subsonic that trying to shoehorn it into a storage device doesn't make much sense.

http://stores.ebay.com/JCMPARTS/Compute ... 34.c0.m322

PC & OS $100

Hard drive as low as $50

$150 - your up and running on a real server that can handle Subsonic.

But don't forget Gary's $50 consultancy fee :D
