Newbie needs help with network setup

Postby DJCMH » Wed Nov 16, 2011 2:34 pm

Just got subsonic after having heard friends rave about it, and it is definitely amazing.

However I'm stumbling on setup for network

I successfully auto-configured my router so that incoming requests can be granted, get the message "successfully forwarding port 8080"

but when i try to connect via the unique username i created, i get error message "name is registered but could not connect to it (ConnectTimeoutException)

I used the username.subsonic.org on a laptop i have connected wirelessly and that was able to connect and play content, so kinda confused if that is because it is on the same network as my host computer, or if this timeout exception is something else. Have not had chance to see if i can get connection from remote location off my direct network.

just wondering if I need to reconfigure my router or make some other change.....I will be receiving the new Amazon Fire in a couple days and want to be able to use subsonic on it so trying to get everything set up before it arrives.

Thanks for any and all help!

It appears that the upnp "auto configure" of the ports failed somehow.

I would shut off the "Automatically configure" option in the network settings and manually create an inbound port mapping on the router that lets port 800 in to the internal IP address of your Subsonic Server.

The reason that it is working on the wireless client is that it is on the same network. I bet if you tried it from a computer that is NOT on the same network it would not work. But try it first...

But if the new device is going to be on the same network as the server and you don't care about external access, just leave it. It should work fine.

If you need help, post the model of your router and I'm sure there is a guide somewhere out there...

Its a Belkin F9K1102 v1 (that is what is says in hardware under router info when i open it)

ETA : hmm i restarted my router (it dropped my internet link for some unknown reason) and now I am getting successfully registered web address without any error info.

Guess it might be working now.

Try these directions:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... bsonic.htm

Follow them all!

yeah found that and followed it....think i got it but will need to test from non-network remote device to be sure.

eta - should the box in network settings marked Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic be left unchecked if i have gone ahead and made a virtual port in my router following the instructions in portforward?

Correct. If you did it manually, uncheck the "Automatic" box...

ok for a bit it said router found, now it says port forwarding disabled. is something still missing in my setup. Box is unchecked and I thought i set up everything right in the router. still says that the web address is responding successfully.

ok on a different subject...is there a way to set the video player to shuffle tracks and continual play..right now all i can do is play one track at a time and have to click on another to start it (music videos so not long playing videos here)..using the default web-browser player

It will say port forwarding disabled because you are now doing it manually.

You can only play 1 video at a time as you have described

OK so I have it setup and a friend of mine in the UK (I am in US) can listen remotely, so seems like everything working fine.

However, when I try to set up a second friend (in Florida) so she can listen as well, she gets error message can not access?

totally newb question since this is all new to me...when i portforward to 8080, it can accept more than one connection at a time, or do i have to have several ports forwarded if i am going to have a group of friends listening potentially simultaneously?

thanks for any advice you can provide.

You only need the one port - some of our users can have up to 60 simultaneous users logged in on the same time.
(my high was 5  )
You do need to be aware of your internet upstream speed however - things can get verrry! slooow!

That's due to the gulf stream effect
Are you using your name.subsonic.org address? that makes sharing your SS a doddle (no IP's or port no's to worry about)
