Not all albums show up on left side

Postby djandrius » Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:53 pm

Problem Description: I've started to notice that not all Artists are showing up on the left side Artist list. From what I can see, subsonic should show all Folders detected in defined path, however even though I can find with search, album does not show up in the list.

Troubleshooting Steps: Verified I can see and play the song with search. Indexing had no issues finding artist. After indexing is complete in search box I type artist name and it will find it. I can play the song without issues. However it would never show up in the list on left side. That means I can't browse my music collection.

Playback Application and version: Not related to issue.

Subsonic Version: Version 4.6.beta2 (build 2566) – November 16, 2011

Server Version: Server jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_26, Windows 7 (65.5 MB / 97.4 MB)

Hardware Platform: Subsonic on Windows, Network file share on Linux.

Java Memory Limit: 700mb allocated

Problem Filename: Eskmo/2011 - Exclusive Ninja Tune Mix/1 - Eskmo - Exclusive Ninja Tune Mix.mp3

Output from ffmpeg -i: As seen from output below, Artist is Eskmo, however that does not show up in Left pane.

Code: Select all

What shows in the left frame is not related to the search index.

Is it Artists or Albums you cannot see :?

What have you told SS where your media folder(s) are and what is the path to the artist/albums that do not show?

I know that. I'm only telling this Artist track is within the define path as it can be found with search, not within the Artist list on left side.

Artists on the left side pane.

Only one single library is defined. This Artist track is within the same path as entire music library with the same categorizing structure:
<Album artist>/<Year>-<Album>/<Track #>-<Artist>-<Title>

I've started suffering from this problem recently as well.
A few artists don't appear on the left pane artist list. Using search it finds the artist without any problems.
On the left pane the previous and following artists appear (same as saying the previous and following folders in the library path). I came to the forums today precisely to see if I could find any other post on it. :?

My directory structure is Music\Artist\Album\Track and Media Folders is pointing to Music\

So, after googling around a bit more and pressing Ctrl+F5 a few times, I decided to try a trick I found on another site.

I created a new folder (Music2) outside of my library path, copied a few artists there and added that new folder to the media folders list.
Then, on the drop down menu of the left pane I chose to see just the new folder. So those 4 or 5 artists appeared as was to be expected. I then selected All Folders from the drop down list of the left pane and Subsonic took quite a while to rebuild the list, but, guess what, all artists appeared this time. So I just deleted the new folder (the content was a copy) and took it off Media Folders.

If the forced refresh (Ctrl+F5) doesn't work for you, you can always try this trick. It did it for me.

I must admit I am puzzled by this problem and one I have not seen.
Its seems to be the opposite of the usual problem with artists showing in the left frame but not being found by search :?

Skywatcher,

thanks for the tip. I've just tried another computer and it actually loaded Artist name correctly on the left pane. I'll check on my other system that I was exhibiting the problem. I'm almost positive it must be the cookie issue. I'll ensure to get a copy of the cookie and look at the contents. However by looking at the cookie on the system I've just loaded all successfully, I can see the problem:

Code: Select all
fetch count:    2
last fetched:    2011-11-27 21:41:52
last modified:    2011-11-27 21:29:28
expires:    2011-12-01 07:04:41
Data size:    5113

My theory is: to check the code in Subsoninc to see what condition(s) forces to ignore the cookie set on a browser and force a full reload. Because I've visited my Subsonic site and cookie was already set, uploading media library did not correctly enforce the code to drop the browser cookie and force a reload.

Hallelujah!!

I'd basically given up on the left pane, as newly-created artist folders basically never showed up there for me (I've been dealing with this problem for months - posted about it on here back in July, but no one could really help). I'd tried Updating Search Index, I tried moving everything to a new folder (from "J:/Artist/Album" to "J:/Music/Artist/Album" structure), and I'd done multiple uninstall/reinstalls. Nothing seemed to solve the problem.

Based on this thread, I did a CTRL-F5, and saw no change. HOWEVER - I then Disabled two auxiliary directories I'd added recently (one for unfiled torrents, one for Soulseek downloads), and lo and behold, the Artist list refreshed with every artist I've added in the last several months.

I love SS more than several members of my immediate family, but this has been a pretty frustrating issue, and I'd love to know if there was fix beyond this workaround. I'm wondering if my 2 dozen users or so will have to go through the same rigamarole to get the full list to populate?

OK, forget my excitement in my previous post. This has not proven to be a durable fix for me.

Yesterday I added several new Artist folders, and an Album in each of them. I did an Update Search Index shortly thereafter.

In the "Recently Added" screen, I see the albums associated with those new Artists. If I search for them, they turn up. However, the left-pane listing is not displaying the new Artist-level folders.

I've done several rounds of CTRL-F5, enabling/disabling various folders (up to and including the primary Music folder), with no effect.

This bug has the effect of creating a sort of shadow directory, where there are albums I can listen to if I remember that they are there and that I want to listen to them. However, my favorite method (just scrolling through the left-hand Artists list until something catches my eye that I want to listen to) is not really possible without leaving out lots of stuff.

Really frustrating.

I should note (if it matters) that I'm running this on a Win7 machine, with the primary Music folder living on a directly-connected external hard-drive - it's not set up as a NAS.

What browser do you use? For Firefox follow http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Deleting%20cookies Let me know if that fixes in any way. You can also try listing 'about:cache' after you clear your cookies to get more info on the cache.

I haven't added any new entries to my collection, therefore had not encountered this issue again after the last rebuild happened successfully.

Thanks for the insight, djandrius.

I do use Firefox, and just cleared cookies. The missing Artist folders are... still missing.

I just did an about:cache -

On "Memory cache device," the only hit for "subsonic was actually from Facebook, from a share I put up for a friend of mine:

Code: Select all
https://www.facebook.com/ajax/metacomposer/attachment/link/scraper.php?scrape_url=http%253A%252F%252Fradiomob.subsonic.org%252Fshare%252FLqSTn&targetid=1133962415&__a=1&xhpc=composerTourStart&nctr[_mod]=pagelet_wall&__user=699180292

(I'ts Blind Willie Johnson, if anyone cares to parse the link in the URL above :))

On "Disk cache device," there were two or three traces of Subsonic, but those look to be album covers that I'd clicked on to enlarge:

Code: Select all
https://s-external.ak.fbcdn.net/safe_image.php?d=AQB0P3sq263Wersy&w=90&h=90&url=http%3A%2F%2Fradiomob.subsonic.org%2FcoverArt.view%3FpathUtf8Hex%3D6a3a5c4d757369635c4a6f686e736f6e2c20426c696e642057696c6c69655c5b313932395d2050726169736520476f642049276d205361746973666965645c666f6c6465722e6a7067%26size%3D200

So, yeah... I remain stumped.

Have a look at your subsonic14.index file with a text editor.
That should have an entry for the artist then entries for all the tracks paths for that artist under that.
Just need to find out if your index file is getting updated correctly.

I'm not super familiar with this, but it all looks correct to me - Count Basie was one of the folders I created (j:\Music\Basie, Count), so here are the first few entries I see:

Code: Select all
j:\Music\Basie, Count ixYxi 0 ixYxi BASIE, COUNT ixYxi  ixYxi  ixYxi  ixYxi

Does that all look right to you?

I was about to write that looks ok then I took another look.
The artist line should start with a "R" eg
Code: Select all
R ixYxi 1304182205765 ixYxi 1304182205765 ixYxi D:\shares\music\0\10 c.c ixYxi 0 ixYxi 10 C.C ixYxi  ixYxi  ixYxi  ixYxi

This is then followed by the album starting with "A"
Code: Select all
A ixYxi 1306157569859 ixYxi 1306157569859 ixYxi D:\shares\music\0\10 c.c\10 C.C. - The Original Sountrack ixYxi 0 ixYxi 10CC ixYxi THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK ixYxi  ixYxi  ixYxi

I cannot see the "R" on your post - was that just a cut and paste error?

Yes, let's call it a cut and paste error :) (Actually, I just didn't know that that was where the artist line starts - like I said above, I'm really not familiar with this).

So, here's a better c/p:

Code: Select all
