Videos Showing Spinning Gear Only

Postby gurharman » Mon Jan 02, 2012 9:53 am

So i just custom built my own PC and was trying to watch a movie on subsonic. The moment i press play, i see the "play" button switch to a "spinning gear" and then back to the "play button". All of this is overlay on a solid black screen. I imagine I am missing some player somewhere along the line but am not sure which.

Any help would be great.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Problem Description: When I attempt to play a video on the subsonic hosted site, all I see is a black screen where the "play" button becomes a "spinning gear" and then reverts to the "play" button.
Troubleshooting Steps: Installed Flash Player, Installed Silverlight, Installed a Codec pack.
Playback Application and version: Appears to be JWPlayer right on the website.
Subsonic Version: 4.6 (build 2585) – December 6, 2011
Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_20, Linux (287.4 MB / 507.8 MB)
Hardware Platform: Windows 7 Professional (Clean Install on new build)
Problem Filename: Any video file played on this computer only.

Simply put, I'm missing some player or codec that slipped my mind and don't remember what I need to install.

What happens when you click the play button after the spinning logo of death goes away?

That happens every time I press play. It is only happening on this new build and works fine on my laptop.

On the rare occassion, I will see the video tracker show red as if the whole video has loaded but the "spinning gear" continues.

Yea. That's what leads me to believe it is a problem with the codecs/players installed on this brand new build.

So far, I've done Flash Player, Silverlight, and the K-Lite Codec Pack.

Go into the videoPlayer.jsp file, and uncomment the plugin setting in the player variables. The plugin should be a meta data viewer. Try playing the video. It should show a whiteish screen with - you guessed it - meta data! Is the data shown correct?

Anything to do with Windows Media Player? I just realized my WMP won't even open up.

Only setup change I made was install my system on a SSD boot drive and all my applications on a backup data drive.

Well I assume you are using the built in flash. That shouldn't have anything to do with Windows Media Player. Did you try looking at the flash settings by right clicking the flash box? How about updating flash? Restarting everything?

Yes its playing with the embedded flash. I downloaded it today so its updated for sure.

All the settings are the same as they are on my laptop which is playing the same sample video just fine atm.

This is not a subsonic problem but is a problem with your web browser - which is???

If you are using IE9 than my best advice is DONT.
Download chrome or Firefox and try that - IE9 does try to use WMP codecs which may be the problem.

I always use Chrome. But this problem occurs in Chrome, Firefox, and IE.

Try editing the videoPlayer.jsp file and uncommenting the plugin which, unless you changed it, should be set to "metaviewer-1." Then try to play the videos and compare the data from a working player and the non-working player. Tell us what you find.

Hey! I was just playing around and realized that if I set a max bitrate of 128 on the player or user, then video wouldn't work at 1000 kbps. It makes 100% sense. Can you double check to see if you set a max bitrate?
