I had this problem, moreso with Periscope player than SubAir,
and the only surefire answer was to move the music files & playlists onto the PC where Subsonic was running.
Also building playlists in the 8hr range helped.

Almost no matter what I did, the slow communication between my Promise NS4300N
and whatever machine had Subsonic just bogged it down.

Having just recently (yesterday) migrated to a QNAP TS419P II with Subsonic installed,
I'm hoping to have better performance. Single-song playback is fine (though I've heard of transcoding issues).

The challenge I've got now is formatting the playlists in MediaMnkey on the PC
so Subsonic on the NAS can load them...

Use Mediamonkey with Export M3Us/Create Playlists for Child Nodes script.
You can automatically change the playlist to suit the path structure for SS then.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

If only I could figure out what that is...

Easy -
  • select a track and add to playlist in SS then save playlist
  • Do the same in mediamonkey with the same track and export as m3u.
  • Open up both playlists in a text editor and note the differences.
  • Then just use the script I mentioned to change the path.
  • In my case I have to change "\\myserver\" (UNC) to "D:\Shares\" (Local)

Remember once you export the playlist MM will not be able to read it unless you reverse the process.

I am on day 4 of my trial & this thread is my biggest issue... the fact that this hasn't been resolved in over a year when the thread started is not the best way to get me to part with my cash :-(

Yeah, it seems like it's not developed for all kinds of folder structure.
I can't browse my collection (2100 sub-folders (artis-album) in three folders)...search is also very slow. Android phone times out constantly, even if I just place two albums in one folder, it takes a a couple of seconds for the web-player to list the contents.

I've got a 100mbit connection at work, and a 10mbit upload at home, so it's not a connection issue.

SubSonic server is running on a Windows Home Server 2011 built on an AsRock 330Ion mobo with 4GB RAM and 10GB of HDD space.

I guess I will have to look elsewhere, SubSonic sounded very promising, but I'm not restructuring my collection just for this :(

Will look into Plex and Remote Potatoe, perhaps overkill for just streaming music but we'll see...

I think it has to do with the playlistCallback in playlist.jsp. If you go through the steps required to add a song to the playlist, you will see that for each song, a callback is sent to the server. This might be causing the bottleneck.

hm, I don't have any "central" playlist, I have *.m3u-lists in every album folder.
