Unfortunately, I think that SqueezeCenter (now Logitech Media Server) is the only server that gets the browsing right, although it's more difficult to use as a phone based roving music collection than Subsonic. It allows both folder and tag based browsing, with tag based browsing allowing following the path from: genre -> artist -> album -> song (or play all at any/each of those levels). It also handles multiple tagging ("Classical;Opera" = "Classical" + "Opera", for example). If those 2 features were added, I would throw away all of my other music players. I have a large and eclectic music collection, so this may be less important for others, but I have and use:

Subsonic - convenient, but only folder based and multiple tags not handled
SqueezePlayer/Squeeze Commander - not as convenient to set up to play, but otherwise tags & browses from server
PowerMP - general purpose local music player; handles multiple tags, but can't browse from "genre" -> "artist" -> "album"
MixZing - decent local music player; can browse genre -> artist -> album almost well, but doesn't handle multiple tags
Google Music - can hold a large collection and stream for free, but can't hold my entire music collection; can't browse genre -> artist -> album; and doesn't handle multiple tags
Amazon MP3 - not very convenient, but can stream Amazon MP3 purchases; doesn't even handle "genre"
V. A. M. P. - reasonably good voice searched local player

Both my folders and my tags are well organized, so folder vs. tags isn't about being lazy regarding keeping both organized. It *is* about information in tags that doesn't fall within a straight forward folder structure... multiple genres per artist, per album, or multiple artists per song, etc. It's odd that Subsonic, for all it's other sophistication, doesn't deal with tags for browsing, only searching.

I'm also requesting ID3-tag sorting. Subsonic would be outstanding if this feature was implemeted.'

It seems to be the most visited feature request at this forum.

What kind of contribution/support is needed to make this possible in subsonic?

+1 from me too..

Would be nice if file/folder creation date was shown when listing search results, browsing albums or showing playlist. Maybe as checkbox toggle under personal / Display settings. If anyone has a hack to enable this feature then please PM me.

Thanks in advance :)

Just registered to +1 this request.

An earlier poster mentioned my CRITICAL reason for this requirement: torrents! Keeping music in its original directory structure with the same name allows me to continue seeding torrents.

I just got started with SS and love it so much, but the inability to browse music by Genre/Artist/Album is a definite dealbreaker for me. I pledge $30 if this feature gets added in the web + Android interfaces.

Would also like to acknowledge my request for this.

I had showed this to my cousins, so that they could grab any music I had. And the first thing my cousin had asked me was if she could search by genre. Which I had to respond with no at the time.

This would greatly open up a lot of flexibility for everyone, I believe.

Thanks, Sindre I really enjoy this program, as I donated and use it on my phone constantly when I am at work or driving around.

Adding my request for this feature. Wanted to just play "childrens" genre music for my kids the other day but couldn't. I'd donate again for a feature like this.

I am sure most users are aware but in case any one visits that doesn't know, you can play random tracks from any single genre.
However as vancamp posted earlier:
vancamp wrote:Subsonic - convenient, but only folder based and multiple tags not handled

This means if you use multiple genre tags SS treats them (at present  ) as separate entities
eg: New Age; Ambient is listed separate from New Age :(

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Just wanted to chime in with some feedback for the Developer. I love, love, love that subsonic's logic is built around the folder structure. I've been searching for years for a good clean solution with simple folder navigation that didn't choke on tags when I threw 250 gb of mp3's at it. Pls don't screw with a good thing.

Some media player choke with large librarys, but having used WinAmps library, GiantDisc, Amarok and other systems and I can say that there was no choking and I have 500 GBs of music (there is no other option that is better than iTunes on mac that I can find - it actually works very well but i dislike the bloat - iTunes store, match, etc...). Folder browsing works for the majority of people it seems, but to find classical music in large libraries it is just not very good. Please don't get me wrong, Subsonic is great and I am very happy we have it. A tag based browsing option and better, unrestricted search would only make it that much more outstanding.

nobody is saying to screw with its folder based structure, we are simply just asking to add the option to choose, folder based or tagged based. Its a severe limitation to any media player to not be to sort by genre and other options. with computing power these days i highly doubt libraries of any size will choke on tag based structure, and if it does, then u simply revert back to folder based or upgrade your server....
isnt options a good thing?

Donator here that feels this feature is a must.

Genre is as important as band when you have a large collection.

Also from the front page:

"Manage 100,000+ files in your music collection without hassle."

I would beg to disagree. With a large collection you can manage it without hassle. But you cannot enjoy it without hassle.

Also, there is a fantastic feature in SqueezeBox, where you can filter on "New Music". This will list albums/songs added in descending order of time added to the DIR. This is an amazing feature that I would also love to see in Subsonic.

Thanks for reading!

Home - Recently Added tab sorts your albums as above
