I never used ratings in iTunes or Subsonic, it's just too cumbersome. But, after spending some time with Spotify, I am on board with a Starred tracks/artists plan.

Personally, I would use Stars to select favorites for an offline playlist that is always synced to my phone, and a quick shuffle playlist for web or phone where you only get your favorites. The current playlist system seems to need an overhaul, and this is a great step in the right direction. Let's keep it simple please!

Sounds good... but I second the suggestion about keeping the folder hierarchy as part of. My music is organized by top level folders which represent Genres and I have Albums under each. If I start tagging favorites, I would want to navigate to all my Favorite Christmas music (which is a top level folder).

There is lots of feedback on individual song rating desires here. My vote is in there as well. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1979&start=75

A scalable rating system for song enjoyment level marking is desired the single star favorite system is not desired. I believe having weighted values to individual songs is better than a flat favorite single star rating system. There are times when I'd rather listen to my cream of the crop preferred songs vs something I liked yesterday under different circumstances. I also like the idea mentioned of tagging songs that are disliked. I believe that these preferences should be user settings and not global settings since everyone has their own individual preferences.

I would love to nominate Mr Yuk as the icon for marking songs disliked, but since that has a trademark I cannot suggest its use. Perhaps a default icon of skull and crossbones could be used by default, but allow the end user to provide an alternative icon of choice within settings options or via the config file in Scalable Vector Graphics format only.

I also like the idea of being able to search favorites. I request the search option be able to target all favorites, albums, and individual songs so searching is easier. Maybe even having a search option for weighted values to albums based off of ratings of individual songs.

I think we should leave the album rating feature in place, but add a "starred" feature.

If you've ever used Gmail, you may have noticed the starred feature. Next to every email, there is a star. It can mean whatever you want it to.

How about having a star next to every row in main.jsp. Whether it's an album, video, or a song, have a start next to it that toggles between on or off.

To some users, starred could mean favorites. To others, it could mean just the opposite.
To those who want to keep track of what TV episodes they have or haven't watched, put a star next to the ones you have watched.

In addition, next to "Play All" and "Play Random" could be "Add Starred".

Also, on the home screen, another tab would be added called "Starred" which would show the most recently starred items for the current user only.

I think this would be extremely useful, because stars would have different meanings for everyone. I would use stars with songs to indicate a liked song. But by videos, I would use it to "check off" which videos I've already watched.

Generally this is a good idea, but it's completely up to the user:
- I, and many others hate the star system, simpler 'Favourites' would be awesome for us, and it's better/easier to implement for mobile devices
- The star system became sort of a standard amongst audio players. Dropping it would make Subsonic less compatible.

The best thing would be a separate implementation instead of replacement. The user could select with two checkboxes whether he wants Stars and/or Favourites (although its pretty sure either he chooses one or the other)

I'm a huge fan IF:

1. Ratings are not stored in tags and
2. Ratings are per user.

This would be absolutley awesome. The ratings do need to be seperated by users though, so each user can keep track of their favorite music. An view of most favorited, the ability to see what other users like and a neat way to dig up music you've tagged would also be nice.

Also, tagging an album or artis should not automatically tag every track/album each level of tagging should be separate.

I like the favorites idea also. But I would really like Subsonic to read the rating from the tags, this way I can integrate with MediaMonkey. With the favorites idea, maybe Subsonic could maintain an m3u playlist of the favorites, then MediaMonkey can read that for some better compatibility.

This sounds like a good idea, I had a Zune for a while and it used a like / dislike system similar to what you are describing. It would write a "like" as a 4-star rating in the song tag, and a "dislike" rating as a 1/2-star rating in the tag.

Having an option to write to tags like that would be great for the administrator account, so you could manage your own library and ratings would "stick" for use in other programs.

Other users would not be able to write to tags, but have their ratings data saved in the db only.

+1 on this.

Random playlist: Also include the favorites in the "Tilfeldig spilleliste/Random playlist" feature in the "Om/About" section. "Favorites" could be a selection in the last dropdown box currently labeled as "Mappe/Folder".

Please include some sort of track rating in the next release (which will hopefully be soon). Thanks.

With the new scheme the user will be able to specify his/her favorite artists, albums and songs, for instance by toggling on/off a star.
There will also be a new page "My Favorites" listing these artists, albums and songs. This will eventually also be available in the Android app etc.
What do you think? Would this be an improvement or not? Any suggestions, thoughts?

Hello Sindre,

I think the best option is to merge all the Features (Rating,Favorites & MP3 Tags).

* The Rating System should not be lost
* new Feature "LoveIt" for Album and Tracks
* read/(write) Ratings from mediaFile Tags

The "LoveIt" can reflect all Selections for all Media Filetypes (Audio, Video, Album, Podcast) in an Summary Page
also a Top this Week/Month/Year Summery Page and other Statistics for group ranking.

This would be nice and awesome to see that in the Final 4.7!! :D

Best Regards

Absolutely love the idea of replacing the ratings with this "LoveIt" feature described above!
