Android app: no Flash in Chrome

Postby derekcentrico » Tue Feb 28, 2012 11:08 pm

When I selected this system and donated to obtain full functionality, I thought the Android app would be more in-depth. It isn't as such. It just links to an http:// address and opens up the tablet browser. However, Android Chrome does not have Flash built-in. So, there is no way to watch those videos.

Thoughts on a work-around?

The work around is to use the stock browser and not the Chrome beta browser. Chrome does not and will not have flash capabilities added.

Aside from that, there is a problem with subsonic and tablets in general i think. I have had many droid phones and subsonic works flawlessly on them. I also had a XOOM but subsonic only worked well for 10-20 minutes at a time and then would start lagging like crazy. I just upgraded to an Asus Transformer 201 with the hopes that the faster processor would help but it actually seems to be working worse on this one...Doesn't make any sense at all but my OOOOLD Droid 1 actually ran SS better than either one of my MUCH more powerful tabs

I realize the stock browser will work. But with upcoming Android Jellybeans and onward, we are not to expect ANY flash operations to function. It will be entirely unsupported at that point. Only OSes with existing Flash support will continue to see it while such support is in maintenance status. At some point this too will cease to exist.

I would like to see something more than a workaround while the inevitable is around the corner. I fully believe that within a year I will see Android Jellybean on my equipment at which point such a workaround would be completely impermissible.

As for performance issues, maybe HTMl5 would be a great resolution since Flash on mobile devices has a lot of reported buggy problems not to mention its old architecture.

Time will tell if my investment in Subsonic was worthwhile or a waste.

Sindre has already indicated his commitment to HTML5, which is supported by JW Player. I'm sure he hopes to move in that direction on Android as well.

Has there been any indication on a timeframe or a roadmap?

Not really. We're still a bit early in the game. We just started seeing some html5 recently on youtube that looks pretty good!

I use the Chrome browser for everything, but to play these FLV's, I need to use the stock + Flash.

So, right now, my workaround is to copy/paste the URL from Chrome to the stock browser... then it plays fine.

How can I:

1. Have Subsonic automatically launch the stock browser (while keeping Chrome default for everything else)

or

2. Use a different transcoding and have Subsonic launch another external video player?

Thanks.

1. You can't

2. You can't (as far as I know... someone was trying to make it work before but could not)

Right now we are stuck with the app the way that it is. He's working on it, we just don't know how quickly.

Yes, I can confirm that this works perfectly.

I have Chrome set for everything except for my subsonic server. Remember to include the port number in the URL.

When I launch a video now, it opens up the stock browser, which plays the Flash perfectly. For everything else, I am using Chrome.
