Choppy Playback on Android

Postby bstock » Thu Mar 08, 2012 8:11 pm

Hi,

I seem to be getting choppy playback when played through my Android app. This happens on WLAN or on 4G, and it only seems to happen on VBR MP3's.

The same track plays back fine on a desktop browser.

The song in question is encoded at 182 kbps VBR. I have a 2nd song at 154kbps VBR that seems fine, and anything encoded with CBR even at 320 kbps is fine.

Any ideas? Phone is a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is that there is a problem with the vbr header info for that file.
Try using vbrfix (Free - use Google) and see if that finds a problem - it worked for me on some files that were showing wrong duration.

I'm seeing similar choppiness on VBR mp3s on Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. It consistently seems to affect the first few songs that are downloading on 3G/4G or Wifi while also playing music. After a few tracks are downloaded & saved locally, it mostly resolves itself.

I tried letting the entire song play so it would be cached on the local device, but doesn't seem to make a difference. It's just always choppy. On the last song that did this, I converted it to CBR, re-uploaded to server and it's now fine.
I figured it was some sort of decoding issue by the Subsonic app, might be worth looking into if others notice it as well.

I also noticed this and have dropped back to ver. 4.4 for mobile playback. Ver. 4.4 uses an earlier release of ffmpeg and seems to be more stable for Android playback. It was the only way I was able to get good mp3 > ogg transcoding working properly.

Later versions work better with video playback and are more efficient using multiple threads for video transcoding, but 4.4 seems much better at handling the mobile music needs.

Let's hope we can get the best of both in ver 4.7
