Subsonic Not Staying Up/Online

First of all - I'm sorry for not commenting on this earlier.

I think there are several different issues here, so let me start by throwing out some general ideas; they may not all be relevant to your specific situation.

1. Check the logs, both c:/subsonic/subsonic.log and c:/program files/subsonic/log/subsonic-service.log

2. If you have a very large music collection, try increasing the memory limit (for instance from 100MB to 200MB).

3. Try turning off the search indexing (Settings > Search), and delete the search index file (c:/subsonic/subsonic*.index)

4. Disable automatic port forwarding (Settings > Network), and setup manual port forwarding on your router instead.

5. Use a different router if you have one available.

6. Upgrade to the latest java version.

7. Run jconsole (or even better jvisualvm) to debug the Java VM. This requires some familiarity with Java, but is an invaluable tool to detect memory leaks.


Personally I have three Subsonic servers running on Windows 7, Windows XP and Linux, and they run for months without any issues. Of course, that doesn't mean that there are no stability bugs in Subsonic - but it means that it makes it difficult for me to identify them.

If any of the suggestions above works for you, it would be most helpful if you report back (please include the details of your installation).

I have had this problem with 4.3 and up until I replaced my router as Sindre suggested in #5, Subsonic would say it was running, port would check fine, but couldn't connect....rebooting the router fixed it, just the router not subsonic or the host computer so that told me it was a router issue.....yes it was a subsonic vs router issue, because no other programs using the router would be shut out, but a router issue none the less.

I now have a new router, ran the 4.4beta since it was released and not one shut down, now running 4.4 (thanks Sindre)

1. I'll check the logs, but I'm not sure what to look for. I can pm them to you if you'd like.

2. I only have about 12K songs. I've increased memory to 700.

3. I've turned automatically search index off. If I delete that file will I be able to index when I add new files?

4. Automatic Port forwarding has been off since day one. I manually forwarded it.

5. This is something I have not thought about. I would really rather not, I have a Time capsule and it cost me a lot of $, but I'll try troubleshooting that.

6. I believe I am on the latest Java..

7. Haven't tried this.

Alright, So I was looking at the info in the About tab and I noticed this line:

What does the MB data mean? Is that my memory?

Has anyone found a tried and true solution to this issue yet?

I'm having the same issue though the SS services only stays on for an hour or two before closing out. When I get home this evening, I'll check logs and try some of the suggestions littered throughout this post.

In the meantime, if you've found a permanent fix, let me know!

What are you running Subsonic on?

I decided to just start using my desktop again. No matter what I did I could not figure out how to stop it from crashing on my NAS. Since going back to my desktop it has not crashed at all. It's been 6 days straight.

I was running 4.2 with no problems. Upgraded to 4.4 (now with video, w00t!!), and started having these issues with the server just stopping responding, and I'd have to stop/start the service (WinXP 32)

I tried all sorts of things to get it right, and nothing was working so I ended up here, read through this thread, etc.

Funny thing, when I tried to launch the browser here locally, on the machine it's hosted on, I'd get these goofy java error pages in the frames where we'd normally see the Subsonic UI.

Well, in there it was saying something to the effect of "jetty, blah blah, 99mb of 99mb used".

I checked my settings, and sure enough, it's defaulted to 100mb. I upped it to 300mb, restarted Subsonic, and it's all smooth now!

It's been dying like crazy lately, 3-4 times a day, so I"ll check back in tomorrow and weigh in on whether or not it's been resolved. I suspect that it's fixed though. I have a massive music/video collection and it only makes sense that as I add to it, it's going to chew up more memory.

And to Sindre, thanks brother, for developing an absolutely AMAZING media server!!! This product is incredible, and the cost is sooo right! Absolutely the best media server product I've ever seen, and coupled with the client on my Android devices, I'm in heaven!! Truly, this Subsonic server is the answer to many prayers!

Just a follow up to my last post, it's been over 12 hours, icon is green and I'm streaming just as it should be.

The fix for me to resolve the dying server issue was to bump up the memory option from the default of 100mb to 300mb.

The interface is once again snappy and smooth, selections are nice and quick again, and of course, streaming is working flawlessly.

Hope this helps someone having a similar issue.

I had same problem. I had to boost memory size in control panel to 1000M. Used max 456M that I see. About 100K songs.

I had this problem and fixed it by increasing the amount of RAM allowed by subsonic.

The default settings are 250mb. I increased it to 1000mb due to 90,000 songs in my collection.

You can do this by right clicking the tray icon and opening up the control panel.

You can also verify that this is the reason for the "auto shutoff" by opening the "about" tab in the browser. Under about, it will tell you how much RAM the program is using.

It's been said many times here (even by me) but i'll pile on. The issue seems to be solved by increasing the amount of memory that Subsonic is allowed to use.
