RSS feed to newsreader

Postby GJ51 » Sun May 06, 2012 7:15 pm

I use Rainmeter on my desktop to program rss feeds to the desktop, but I can't get the Subsonic forum RSS link to work in my reader.

;RSSURL=http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/rss.php
;RSSName="BIOS-Mods"
;RSSURL=http://drudgereportfeed.com/rss.xml
;RSSName="The Drudge Report"
RSSURL=http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/feed.php
RSSName="Subsonic"

The two commented links work fine, but I can't get the SS link working. I've also tried

RSSURL=http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/feed.php#

Anybody know the right link?

Not much help, but are you sure the problem is not with your reader? http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/feed.php works fine if you open it in a browser like Firefox, and the xml coming out from it looks legit:

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<feed xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" xml:lang="en-gb">
<link rel="self" type="application/atom+xml" href="http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/feed.php" />

<title>Subsonic Forum</title>
<subtitle>forum.subsonic.org</subtitle>
<link href="http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/index.php" />

Very possible. Funny that the other links work fine. I'll try another reader code later. Thanks.

I checked the xml from the Drudge Report Feed, and it looks like this:

Code: Select all
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" media="screen" href="/~d/styles/rss2full.xsl"?><?xml-stylesheet type="text/css" media="screen" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~d/styles/itemcontent.css"?><rss xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:feedburner="http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0" version="2.0">

As you can see, the application type for Drudge Report is application/rss+xml, while the Subsonic application type is application/atom+xml. It could be that your reader doesn't support the latter? Just guessing though, but technically, those links aren't exactly the same.

I just tried a reader in a different Rainmeter skin and it works. I'll have to analyze the other skin to see if I can fix it. Thanks for the assist.

Got it working.

Image

It's a Rainmeter desktop skin that can be moved around on the desktop to any location on the screen. Mouseover gives the complete title and a left click takes you right to the post in your default browser.

It took a bit of time to get what I wanted with color, font size and spacing, but it's now just what I wanted.

If anyone esle uses Rainmeter and would like the code just send me a PM and I'll post a link to the file for download.

Before the Forum changed, there used to be a way to get a feed of just your unread posts... anyone know if that is still possible?
