Router not found/cannot connect to URL [Ubuntu]

Hi there,

I downloaded subsonic on Windows a few months back and everything worked fine, syncing to my android etc, really enjoyed it.
Then my trial ran out, and I didn't use it for a while.

Now I'm back, and I'm on Ubuntu and donated for a licence key (I accidentally paid twice than I wanted - browser issue - but lets see if I can fix this first!)

I'm finding this really frustrating. On my Network settings it says that it cannot find my router, and that my custom web address is registered, but could not connect.
If I completely disable my firewall I can successfully forward port 4040, however the web address can still not be connected to. I'm using the same custom address I had before I donated - not sure if that affects anything.

When I activate the firewall port forwarding does not occur, it says it can't find my router. Now I add port 4040 as an allowed service, as well as connection to my router, still no luck. I think the Ubuntu firewall (I'm using Firestarter interface) automatically sets the security to maximum, so is there anything else I need to enable for Subsonic to even be able to contact my router?

P.s. I also manually added the port forwarding for 4040 on my router settings to my local IP address, it has no effect.

All I want to be able to do is connect to Subsonic via my mobile device, but I can't even do that at the moment, incredibly frustrating!
Any help would be greatly apprecited.

It's probably something simple that just needs a little tweak. The most common problem is not getting the port forwarding correct. It seems simple, but it can be confusing and often obtuse on some routers. First check to see if the router is setproperly by giong to canyouseeme.org and entering theport number you're using for Subsonic. You will NEVER connect until you see it work from canyouseeme.org.

Ah interesting, it says it cannot see via port 4040.

On my router settings I have the option to enter a start port and end port, the end port being 4040 I assume..
Should the start port be something specific? I would have thought it should be any port, so I'm a bit confused by the restriction.

Other than that I believe I have my firewall configured correctly to allow 4040 access.

I'd be lying if I said I was an expert at this!

It's always the hurdle to getting in from outside, and unfortunately no two routers have the same interface, and they are all a bit unique. Yes, you need an "any" entry that forwards "any" to 4040 at the internal ip address of the host where SS is installed. I have a Verizon router, 6 or 7 installs of SS going all the time, and I still screw it up just about everytime I do the entry as the table on my router is counterintuitive. Either that or I'm bass ackwards.

Read your router's manual and look at similar entries in the router for othe programs to see if you can get a clue as to how to properly enter the fwd rule. Plain and simple, it won't work until the port is open and you can connect from canyouseeme.org.

You're on the right track.

My guess is that Start would be "any" and end would be 4040.

What is your router model etc.?

Finally fixed it!

I did two things, but not sure which one helped...

I reset my router, and then gave my machine a static ip, then reconfigured the router to forward to my new static ip.

If anyone has the issues I was having, then I'd suggest doing both of those, although this advice has probably been posted here countless time!

Yes it is in the Tutorials section but it always bears repeating. Setting a static ip for the server helps keep it nailed down, and some routers don't seem to always take the frowarding settings until they get rebooted.
