Imho this is the wrong approach. After all a key benefit of using a database with all metadata is that the decision can be postponed until rendering time, i.e. you can make the sort order even user specific. Maybe I want to have year first, then artist, then album just now as I am curious what music I was listening 15-20y ago? Of course I don´t want to reorganize my folders and trigger a lenghty backup afterwards.

That may be why I don't see some of the other problems others are reporting.

I have sorted them \Music\Albumartist\Album.
I too can see no difference to 4.6.

I made this sorting because since I use Subsonic I realized that Subsonic needs this sorting to show music with artists in the left frame and Album and tracks in the main frame. Anything is showing up the same with 4.7:
Albumartists: left frame
Albums: main frame
Tracks: main frame
Artists: Main frame together with tracks if there are different artists in an album

Mh 4.6 shows Directoryname, 4.7b1 shows id3 tag Album name... so this CAN'T look the same in both versions.
And I don't want to sort 3GB of music in a new way as I do this sorting for so many years now... I hope there will be a way in settings or somehow to change how Subsonic 4.7 shows up dirlisting.

I'd run chkdsk first then do a manual rescan to see if you can get any clues. Some hard drives start to break down as they age and the heat generated by intense prolomged disk activity is enough to put them over the edge. I'd also look at what kind of disk temperatures are being generated during the scan. HD tune pro or any similar disk monitoring software may be helpful for looking at the health of the hard drive(s).

Hm an OS issue? :) I don't think so... 4.6 runs stable. Checkdisk is fine, I've running Hard Disk Sentinel always in background and get reports every day via email about status of my fileserver. All fine. No problems with HD or temperature issues.
Also I wonder why Subsonic always freezez at the same position at media rescan. Btw this only happens on rescan, not on first time scan which runs fine.

I cannot see any difference.
Even Tracks without tags are shown properly, when the folder-structure is o.k.
Even If there are no title-tags at all, subsonic takes the filenames of the tracks.

Perhaps it is a little confusing fo some with music with and without tags:
If there is a title tag only the title is shown.
If there is no title tag the filename is shown. And most people at least name their files "artist - title".
So with tracks with and without title tag in an album-folder it looks very mixed, some tracks with artist, some without artist.

You can't blame subsonic or your own mess. :)

We have no mess! :) Every mp3 I have in my collection is PROPERLY tagged with id3v1 and 80%+ tagged in id3v2 too! Primary folder structure is by date...
for example:
"/2012/Artist--Albumtitle-Year"
but I have others which I sort into Record labels for example:
"/Labelname/Artist--Albumtitle-Year"
.. this worked like a charme in 4.6.
When I enterey directory "/2012/" I got a listing with "Artist--Albumtitle-Year"
now in 4.7b1 I get only "Albumname" ... thats pretty confusing and not helpfully :(

Btw, If I would change my sorting structure like yours into "/Artist/Albumname/, I would have thousands of Artist dirs with only 1 Album in it. This would be a MESS and "stupid" work in my eyes! ;)

Like others have state previously, 4.7b1 is getting the album name from the tag, and not the album folder name like it used to previously use in 4.6. All my music is tagged the way I like it (Album, Artist, Track, Title, Year, and imbedded artwork). All of my MP3s are IDv2 or later (about 25% of my collection), and the remaining bit of my collection is FLAC...tagged the same way. While my music collection isn't as large as most, I do have over 2,000 albums. Redoing my tags is not an option. My solution, is use MadEvil's Mashup Mod. There is a checkbox to toggle between using tags or the dirname, which is exactly what should be in 4.7 final.

at the moment in the technical Preview it doesnt work for the maincontroller, but in final it should work. 8)

In jriver media center. The diretory is added as a tag on import. So you just use that directory tag along with the rest of the tag to sort. Pretty simple and solves this issue.

LOL - I should know better. You can never make EVERYBODY hapy in a forum.

At least I prod the deep thinkers to go one step further.

Ok wizard. Then seeing as how you only divulge relevant information AFTER you ask the question I'll refrain from offering further suggestions so as not to waste your time. Good luck.

I am not using the beta so I cannot comment but is there anything showing up in the log to indicate a problem?

At that rate at least you only have another day to wait
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

It does take a while but shouldn't be that long? what spec is the server? Also how much memory have you given subsonic, give it lots!

Re: 4.7.beta1 Taking 3 days to scan library?

Postby GJ51 » Sat May 26, 2012 7:24 pm

My experience via the upgrade path was problematic and the upgrade method may not yet be quite ready for prime time, which may be why the beta has not been officially announced even though it is on Sourceforge.

I did get a great result after uninstalling Java and SS 4.6 completely. I then installed the latest Java 7.4 for Windows, both 32 and 64 bit, then a clean install of 4.7 B1.

All is well, very stable, and lightning fast.

50k+ songs
4.5 TB including the videos, Blue Ray rips, and recorded TV files

Everything works butter smooth and all transcodings are working for all file types, including all music > ogg for use on my Android devices.

No going back for me - best version of SS to date by far.

Full scan only takes about 10 min.

Postby theVDude » Sat May 26, 2012 11:27 pm

Definitely needs some work. Any way I can tell it to NOT try to organize my library?

The program makes no changes to your library, it merely reads it and dispalys it in a way that you may or may not appreciate. There's an entire discussion on this very issue in the 4.7 beta thread in the Announcements section. Recommendations have been passed to the developer for his consideration.
