Any way to do live streaming (audio only)

Postby glenleslie » Wed Jan 05, 2011 12:01 am

Greetings... first day out here.

is there any way to do live streaming (line in/mic in and stream that feed) using subsonic?

I don't see a yeah or a nay regarding "live streaming".

(searched here in the forums, FAQ and docs-- it all talks about 100,000 files and gigabytes of storage for files).

If there's no direct support for a live feed into the streamer, is there a way to fake it out? (some sort of software which streams to an "mp3" file which is really just a proxy for the live stream?)

Thanks for any suggestions. Looks like a really awesome piece of software, just need to stretch it a bit.

p.s. apologies if this is the 50000th time this has been asked/answered. Point me to RTFM if I overlooked the obvious.

Kind Regards,

GL

Thanks pf!

So... can Subsonic handle the "live streams" you reference? Have you figured out a way to do that?

Here's what I got in PM from Sindre. I have not had a chance to try it out. someone else mentioned that ffmpeg will fail on this approach because each subsequent connection from a client woudl spawn a new file and ffmpeg would not be able to able to spawn "n" listeners on the live stream (where n = number of client connections). I'll still try it at some point.

Hi Glen,

I've never tried that or even thought about it, but I have an idea:

1. Find out the proper ffmpeg command for reading from a device and encoding it.
2. Create a transcoding for it, say "mic > mp3" in Settings > Transcoding
3. Add ".mic" to the music mask in Settings > General.
4. Create an empty file "Microphone.mic" somewhere in your music folder.
5. Click play and hope for the best!

Good luck

Thanks for any pointers you would have on how to live stream using subsonic!

Kind Regards,

have no idea if this would work... but you might look into VLC player which can stream input audio. then just have it stream to 127.0.0.1 and then have subsonic pull from 127.0.0.1... or something along those lines just might work...

Hello all! My first time on this forum. Was glad to see that some folks have asked the same question which has been driving me nuts for some time.....ergo the question is if subsonic can stream one or more live audio streams. I realize that subsonic was developed to stream "files" you already have on your computer to other computer and iOS devices, which in of itself is fantastic! But my need is this: feed a Multi channel mixer with live audio from mics, guitars, and other sources. Couple that mixer to an iMac running lion 10.7.3 OS, then stream those individual live feeds out to other computers or iOS devices. Yeah, I know, sounds like a crazy application right? But in actuality, a lot of us out here are looking for a way to do this. I mistakenly posed this question to the author of isub music streamer of datastar consulting, the author of that app. The gentleman was kind enough to offer some theory on how subsonic works, and a possible work around using VLC. I'll head off in that direction and see what I can find. In the mean time, I'll definately start using subsonic plus the isub app on my iPad. But I would appreciate it if the author(s) of subsonic would consider adding this functionality to subsonic. I would add that NCH has just a program that will stream up to six channels, but it is only for the windows platform and costs around $130. And there are certainly streaming services out there, but my application is for use on a LAN. I don't need to get to millions of users in th ethersphere - just share multichannel audio between my iMac and other Mac and PC computers on my LAN. Ethernet? USB? Any insight, help, or direction would be greatly appreciated! Best regards to all! John

You can install and setup IcecastV2 on your local machine and stream to it with whatever software you are streaming from. Then you can create the InternetRadio link in SS that points to your local server. Make sure and add the port forwarding to your router for the Icecast server.

This is what I do. I have Traktor 2 Pro that I mix music with. The unfortunate part is that Traktor only outputs in ogg format, and I would rather it transmit in mp3 so that it is more widely accessible. This means my setup is a bit more complex.
I have traktor broadcasting to IcecastV2 on the same machine on port 8000. I then have Winamp with Oddcast listening to that stream and re-broadcasting and transcoding to mp3 back to the Icecast server on port 8005. I then have my router forwarding the 8005 port to that machine and set up my internet radio setting in SS to point to my external IP address with port 8005.
