Restricing players and transcoding

Postby guisar » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:43 am

I'm having plenty of issues understanding how players, the creation of players, and transcoding are configured. What I'd like is for players to NEVER have transcoding from mp3, flac or anything else wave. Wav must die. However, it seems to be the default way players are created.

Speaking of which, why are players created? I would like to have a single player instance created for each user and that user to receive that player instance whenever they log in- no exceptions- so that I can have a configuration which works for everyone. My daugher is using Linux and android, my bother using android and windows, etc. I mess around with my own situation until it works but often as not even I log in and no sound using the web player.

A single user may log in from many different platforms and want a differently tailored player depending on the environment.

For instance: I use a special set of transcodings associated with my mobile device that transcodes all my music to ogg format for my Android phone. I don't want that setup on my desktopas I also enjoy listening to flac at higher bitrates when I have the bandwidth available. Iff SS restricted each user to a single player definition you would lose this level of flexibility.

On the Player definition screen you can experiment with the settings "Player has dynamic IP address" to see if you can pin one player to a particular ip address as the info button suggests.

There is a lot of flexibility built into SS to accomodate a wide range of uses and varying environments. With some patience and testing you should be able to find the right combination for what you're trying to do.

As far as transcoding goes, i'm not sure what version of SS you're using, but in the latest versions all formats are transcoded directly to mp3 using ffmpeg. mp3 files play directly without transcoding unless you've defined downsampling, which is now done with ffmpeg also.
