Media Folder Fun

Postby Sp4rxx » Thu Jun 07, 2012 4:14 am

First-time user, first post! HI !! :-)

Problem Description:
I have a certain shared network drive (M:) and it contains all of my music I want to stream. The directory structure is as such: M:\[bitrate]\[Artist]\[Artist - Song].mp3, with very little variation to the format of each directory. In standard audio playback software titles (like WinAMP, for example), you can choose the parent director and/or drive letter and select the option to "recurse" subdirectories allowing all music to be 'scanned' and added to a playlist from that parent folder or drive. When I add Media folders to Subsonic, I do not see an option to pull/scan my media automatically. Do I have to literally make hundreds of media folders to include all of my music? It took a long time to organize from a once-filled hard drive in to some sort of order - I just don't want to have to copy all of that work, duplicating all my music just to put it all in one folder.

Troubleshooting Steps:
Dug in to the Subsonic settings and could not find an option pertaining to my problem, also checking online (including this forum) for anyone experiencing a similar issue

Playback Application and version:
Latest Android version available on the Play Store

Subsonic Version:
Latest Version offered on Subsonic.org

Server Version:
N/A

Hardware Platform:
Windows Home Server 2011 x64 OEM

Java Memory Limit:
default - 100MB

Problem Filename:
N/A

Output from ffmpeg -i:
N/A

I am able to connect to the server fine from my Droid RAZR - I just can't see media if I just make my Media Folder M:\ or M:\*.*

If it is a mapped drive then it will not work but it should work if it is just a normal network share
and SS will recursively scan your folders

I would suggest using the UNC pathnames instead.

Well, I guess it isn't your standard run-of-the-mill network share, though it mimics one well.

My router, a Netgear WNR3500L, has a USB port on it where I can put basically any USB storage device and it would read as a 'computer name' with a network-accessible 'share name'. So, to break it down, this is what it looks like on the network:

\\readyshare\USB_Storage\ ------ where "READYSHARE" is the computername assigned by the router and USB_Storage is the share name

Subsonic keeps giving me the message that there are no media folders found. I even drill down to the Artist Name folders (as shown above in my directory structure) to point directly at the music files themselves.

I was using Audiogalaxy for awhile now, but it isn't as robust as Subsonic is advertised as being. However, I fail to understand why Subsonic won't read my music even though other PCs on the network and audio programs can find the songs just fine.

Make sure that the user account that SS is running under has got read/write access privileges for that network share.

Check ... and double-check .... and for good measure, TRIPLE-check....

Still a no-go

The permissions are set from the router and it is set to OPEN, or Full Access.

No its the windows permissions you need to check - the default system a/c that SS is running under has not got network access.

There's no setting for that on the router share. Windows permissions don't talk to that share, as it is completely controlled by the router.

Besides, the user on the PC hosting SS can access the share just fine manually by browsing out to it.

In making some comparisons to other programs vs SS, it would seem that they all have an actual BROWSE button next to the location where you are to "specify" or "choose" a media folder.

It would make sense, then, that if SS had an actual button called "Browse" that it could then connect to the share w/o issue because then the SS program could legitimately find the music - since the electronic connection between the config screen in the browser and the physical location of the media would be met, there would be no problem. Manually typing it in doesn't seem to work.

In order to access a network share the Subsonic service needs to have logon permissions edited to a user account that has permission to access the share.

The steps are described here:

http://monroeworld.com/android/subsonic/

By default the Subsonic service is a local service account and cannot access any files that are not on the local machine.

That worked! By setting up the service to log on as the admistrative account it was running on fixed it instantly! Folders began to populate (though it took a couple hours since I have so many files).

Wow - so is it like setting a program to 'run as administrator' when launching an executable?

Yeah - that's what I've been doing for a while without any problems. Theoretically you should be able to just set the service logon to a standard user account as long as that user account has logon rights to the network share that the music is stored on, but I think most of us are just too lazy to define a new account and just give it admin rights.

The old path of least resistance method.
