Bulk Downloading on Android?

Postby seth.feinberg » Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:22 pm

I'm so sorry if this information is readily available on this forum or the main website but I just couldn't find it.

I just installed/got subsonic up and running last night and am simply AMAZED at its capabilities. How fast it loads up my music list never ceases to shock me. I just have a simple question about storing the content locally on my Android phone (rooted Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.3).

Eventually I randomly flicked to the bottom of the subfolder of an album and saw three additional buttons: Pin, Unpin and Delete. I'm assuming "Pin" means download, but I was just looking for clarification of what the "asterix" on the right side of the file indicates. So if I "Play Now" or "Play Last", it caches my predetermined amount of songs and the asterix is orange and if I "pin"/download it, its green? Do the orange ones delete themselves at some point?

And most importantly (at least to me) and the reason I posted here: Can I bulk download to my phone at all? Like an entire Artists' albums? Or an entire premade playlist?

Thanks again and in advance for the awesome product and your help!

Green - Downloaded manually.
Yellow - Downloaded automatically.

Subsonic will keep a cache only as large as you specify in your settings, and will delete the yellow pinned items that were played earliest in order to make room for new downloads.

I have never tried to pin so much stuff that it is larger than the specified cache size... but i do know that the auto-download of playlist items will NOT delete pinned items.

As to the follow up question, set the number of preloaded songs to "unlimited" and queue up the whole artist or album or whatever. Subsonic will automatically download everything in your queue up to your set cache limit. Transcoded...

Thanks for the response glenn! Tons of useful information in there.

So just to confirm though, I'd have to queue up any albums I want to download by drilling all the way into the folder and queuing them to play? I can't just select, say, Miles Davis from the Artist pane and download all the Miles Davis Albums in my server?

If you press and hold on "Miles Davis" one of the options is "Play Now."

That is a recursive add to the playlist function, and adds all music files to the playlist in that directory and sub-directories.

(within reason of course... too big of a folder and the REST API command will fail)
