This looks interesting but I'm a little nervous about the lack of activity in their forums lately. Seems like it became a ghost town. A mass exodus of customers is not what I look for in a host.

There's nothing that says you can't just pay a host like Lunarpages and install Subsonic on their servers.

But the main problem I see with these hosting solutions is still how you upload all your music to the servers. With a standard 2Mbps upload connection, it would take a year of continuous upload to transfer 1.5TB of FLACs to make full use of these packages. Of course, you couldn't actually do that, because you'd hit bandwidth caps well before then. It will be ten years before home connections increase upload bandwidth enough for these services to become viable.

Virgin in the uk has a 10% upload
so 100mb/s down 10mb up

zen fibre 80 down 20 up

still takes a while but better than most

I found a pretty good company for dedicated servers www.kimsufi.co.uk
choice of OS and subsonic installs fine on Centos

Old thread, but another option for the initial upload may be (if the host offers it) would be to send them a hard drive with your data on in, allow them to copy the data to their system, then ship the drive back to you.

The hosting company my company uses offers this for the initial file upload. Of course they also charge around $125 per user per month for full "virtual cloud" services...
