How to change defult IP for *.subsonic.org address

Postby FirstTracks » Sun Aug 12, 2012 12:59 am

I recently changed routers and the device hosting my Subsonic install changed internal addresses from 192.168.0.192 to 192.168.0.194. However, my *.subsonic.org address still points to the old 192.168.0.194 address and I don't see where to update it.

Help?

Hi FirstTracks,
Your *.subsonic.org address has nothing to do with your internal ip-adress. It's just a DNS-registration pointing to your external ip-adress.
Firstly check if you can log in to your Subsonic using the internal ip-adress: so http://192.168.0.192 should open the proper webpage.
If it doesn't then you'll need to find out on what port Subsonic is listening.
You find out what port your subsonic-setup is using by logging in to the pc where you installed Subsonic.
Open the subsonic Control panel by clicking on the Subsonic tray Icon. On the tab Settings you'll find what port Subsonic is currently using.
If the port is 8080 then you use http://192.168.0.192:8080.
If that works then you're ready to go to the next step.
I suggest you first find out your external ip-adress by visting a site like http://whatismyip.org. Write that down.
Now open your webbrowser and type in: http://External ip:Port Subsonic. ( EG: http://212.313.414.100:8080)
If you get a webpage cannot be displayed error, then you know that there's something wrong with your portforwarding.
From here it's quite simple:
Log in to your router, and define a portfowarding to 192.168.0.192.
Test that again with http://External ip:Port Subsonic.
If that works you should be able to use your *.subsonic.org adress again. That is, if your ISP hasn't changed your external-ipadress since you first registered your *.subsonic.org-adress.
In that case you log in to subsonic as admin via the internal ip-adres, go to Settings / Network and click save again.
It will take some time before your DNS-record is updated, so have patience. I believe that the dns-server is refreshed every 12 hours or so.

If you hit the save button in settings/network that will force a refresh of your *.subsonic.org redirect service.
Providing that you get back a yourname.subsonic.org responded successfully in the status line you should be good to go.

@ BKKKPewsey,
Do you know at what interval de dns-server refreshes?
Luckily I have a fixed IP-adress, but when I change from ISP my ip-adress will change too.
So how long will it take for the dns-records to be updated?

Everything else with regarding to port forwarding, etc. is fine, so:

I'll hopefully be good to go in two hours:

Revisiting this question, now I'm really stumped. I just tried accessing my *.subsonic.org address from my phone's web browser (i.e., from outside my own network) and that worked fine. However, if I try to access it from within my own network it tries erroneously to find Subsonic on 192.168.0.192 instead of 192.168.0.194. Deleting browser cache or trying a different browser or a different computer has no effect. FYI there's nothing in my computer's hosts file to point it to .192, either.

If I change my *.subsonic.org address to something new and save network settings, it works correctly even within my own network. If I change it back to what it was before, it goes back to trying the erroneous .192 address.

First - server.subsonic.org addresses DO NOT use DNS. When you hit the save button it sends the nameregistered email address and license key and associates it with your external ip address and port number of the server hosting Subsonic that is sending the data. If you get the proper response that the name is working properly, then it takes effect immediately and subsonic.org redirects any request for your server to the registered ip:port that you transmitted.

What your describing seems to be an internal issue where your server is listed at an old internal ip somewhere and internal requests are going to the wrong ip address. Reboot your router and go to each workstation on your net work and flush it's dns cache. In Windows you'd open a command promt and type ipconfig /flushdns.

HTH

If the old name still goes to the wrong ip after that, try changing the port number.
