Since the new update my "___Sampler Genre-Something___" Album-Artists disapeared from the left Album-Artist-Frame! Is there a way to get those back??

I made it so that for an artist, you could automatically get a playlist of the top N tracks for each M top related artists. Would that be useful? I just don't want to add a lot of meaningless functionality ("because it's possible"), I like to keep the interface clean and simple.

Oh ok. From your previous post I understood that it is possible from the main artist page. I'd like this feature but of course its very low prio at this point.

I'm good at keeping myself busy by introducing new bugs : ( it'll get back in the next release. some sql hack might fix it meanwhile

Maybe I misunderstood you? I thought you wanted the same "Play artist radio" and "Play top tracks" links that appears on the artist main view to also appear on the "related artists" view for an artist. And I felt that replicating them just added clutter to the interface. But adding different ways of generating "related artists" playlists, that only appears on the "related artists" view, feels much more appealing to me, it makes more sense from a user interface perspective.

Just back from a few days of vacation so I haven't spent too much time with the new version, but I am still getting that elevate yadda yadda error when I start and stop the service (Win 7 x64). Seems to be benign though as the service actually does stop and start.

Next topic: I've never used the album artist tag before--it's blank on all my albums. MusicCabinet and my various artist albums are not playing nicely together so I need to figure this out. I'm not sure how to do this though. For example, I have a whole bunch of various artist albums called, "LTJ Bukem - Earth, Vol. 1", "LTJ Bukem - Earth, Vol. 2" etc. Searching for LTJ Bukem shows only a single track on those albums that LTJ Bukem actually did (I guess he mixed/performed/something all the rest). What should I do with the album artist tag to be able to search for "LTJ Bukem" or "Earth, Vol 1" and be able to see all the tracks of that album and play it as such? I'm trying "LTJ Bukem" in the album artist tag and doing a rescan--the scans just take a while so I thought I would ask.

Disregard the previous post. The scan finished and I now have the desired behavior.

This might be a good starting point: http://www.blisshq.com/music-library-management-blog/2010/10/12/how-to-use-album_artist/

"Album Artist tags should be applied for all compilations that have different track artists. Otherwise, some music players will list each track artist and album name as a separate album. For these tracks, set the Album Artist to something like 'Various Artists' (or whatever is appropriate in your language) and apply this title consistently. It's important that the album artist tag is kept the same for all tracks on an album"

hakko - is there a prebuilt download war file that you continuiously update with your work, or do i need to build my own war file everytime to get the latest and greatest? i pulled the war file from the installation instructions on your site, and it installed 0.5.50b

Hi!

Version 0.5.50b is the last published version that's built as a drop-in replacement for Subsonic 4.6.

During the last two months, I've thrown out heaps of inefficient Subsonic 4.6 code and replaced it with code I've written myself from scratch. This has been out as a beta for two or three weeks now and seems pretty stable. I'll update the homepage with installation instructions for this new version when I've fixed the last issues that have been reported. (the only showstopper right now is that using an external player doesn't work)

If you'd like to try this new version, you could start reading here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9777#p43886

Another idea:
When viewing an artists-page, it would be great to also display the genres (or three "main"-genres) that belong to that artist. This would be great as a first orientation-point for people not knowing the artist.

Yup, tags could definitely be used more than today, for describing and finding artists!

I don't know if anyone in here uses MPD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Player_Daemon), but if you do, you might be interested in this project for MusicCabinet integration by my friend mang: https://github.com/mang/mpdc

edit: there's actually a four month old issue for adding tags to the artist biography, just haven't prioritized it yet: https://github.com/hakko/subsonic/issues/7

I've added this in 0.7.6, see viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9777&p=44779#p44779

hakko,

I decided to start running the beta war file not on my unraid server, just so that i could keep things separated and do some testing. I was wondering if you made modifications to the API's which are used by external programs (iSub in my case) to fetch artwork? What I am seeing is that when browsing folders from my iphone, i can no longer see the album art. When I go into the album and start playing tracks back, the art will actually then download as it is suppose to. The mini art (or thumbnail art that is used when browsing through folders NEVER shows up... just wondering if this was on purpose of if it was a bug.

Also wondering your thoughts on including mini sub html5 player and what your plans are if any for allowing all of your fine work to be accessed via iSub, and other mobile/desktop/etc apps.

I've made quite a lot of modifications under the hood to the API implementation, since Subsonic is no longer handling files, it's all done by MusicCabinet. I'm basically turning Subsonic into a thin web layer that lays upon the MusicCabinet engine.

I'm striving to keep it backwards compatible with the official 1.7.0 API though so that people can still use existing apps. The missing iSub thumbnails is probably a bug from my rewrite of the API (I see it too in iSub now when I checked).

Including the mini sub html5 player is not a bad idea, however, it doesn't have support for all the features I've added into MusicCabinet. You should probably try to convince tsquillario to start using MusicCabinet instead of the official Subsonic server for this to happen. : )

If an app developer asked, it wouldn't be a very big deal to expose the MusicCabinet features via the API to allow apps to use them. But I don't have any immediate plans (even if I've considered it) to change the official Android app for example into having the artist radio function etc. It's the same thing there - you have to convince the author of iSub to look into it, if he/she asked, I'd be happy to write an API to use.
