Opening m3u files with external player

Postby strontjonk » Mon Aug 13, 2012 12:34 pm

My first post here, so I'd first like to give my compliments on the program!
I started using SubSonic last week and am successfully running it now to listen at work to my music from home (Win 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, SS4.7b3, logical order of music, as in 'artist\album\01-song.mp3' and in total ~18k songs). Previously, I used AjaxAmp to stream music, but using multiple users and from a client selecting music on the server was not that easy here.

From work (Win 7, 64 bit, FF and IE9) I stream the music to external player: once selected an album, an m3u list is downloaded and opened via WinAmp. However, when doing this from the server at home, the download link does not appear. Also from another computer at home (Win 7, 64 bit), the download link does not appear. Winamp is running on all system, but the link does not appear yet, so it goes wrong earlier already.
I use the same username, so it cannot be a wrong user-setting, as it works at work. I guess there must be something wrong with the browser settings. What is required for playing to an external source? Java, flash... ? I did not find out how to check relevant log files.

I checked other topics on the forum here, but did not find a solution (yet).

1) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8937&p=37834
This topic discusses switching "Control player automatically", but this did not work for me. Topic reports also other users being unable to download m3u files.

2) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9223&p=39040
This topic also discusses the "Control player automatically" function - no remedy here.

3) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9331&p=39678
This topic discusses empty m3u files, but as my situation works on some systems, I don't think this helps me further.

You might not have opened the port in your router for subsonic. The standard port is 4040, but you can pick any number in the range.
The install manual is here: http://subsonic.org/pages/getting-started.jsp

Thanks for your reply, but that was setup correctly - otherwise I could not have listened from work to my music.

I actually figured out what the problem was: I tried more computers (different OS, different countries, different browser) and none of them worked for this one account. Then I created a new 'external player +list' and there it suddenly worked! Realizing that all computers, besides the one at work, have in common a different IP, the problem was solved so by enabling the 'Player has dynamic IP address'.

Always the best solution, when one finds out by himself :D
