I check my port forwarding and it says port 4040 is closed

I run in Ubuntu

netstat -an | grep "LISTEN "

I get ---- tcp6 0 0 :::4040 :::* LISTEN

It seems that port 4040 is open

Your router is not configured properly or your firewall on the host is not set up with a rule to allow 4040 to pass through.

I tested my port on the site you listed and got the proper result. If you don't get confirmation from the site that the port is open, you won't be able to get to SS from outside.

Are you using Ubunbu? Ubuntu 12.04 ufw by default is initially disabled. Unless I have to enable the firewall, then open port 4040

I have a server with port forwarding in windows and it works fine

This is my router
Setup
Advanced Settings - Port Forwarding
This page allows you to configure port forwarding for local IP addresses.

No, sorry, I'm a Windows guy - but there's no doubt that if you don't get the reply from the test website that the port is responding, you're not going to get in from outside. If you can access the site internally on your network from a different machine than the host then it's probably not the local host machine that's blocking access. If that's true then all your left with is the port forwarding rule on the router. 99% of the time this is where the problem usually lies. I have also seen instances where the rule has been entered correctly in the router but didn't work properly until the router was rebooted.

Bottom line - if you can't see the port from canyouseeme.org or a similar port test site - you won't get a connection from outside.

Yeah, Im a bit surprised at how often we seem to run into this as I've never had it happen on my routers. Glad it's fixed.

If your router is supported try http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index. Much better than the vendor's firmware. Done in < 5 minutes.

Keep in mind that routers are notorious for degrading over time due to heat. This especially problematic if your doung everything on a wireless router as i have had several that dies after about 2 years of normal use. Over time they just seem to start losing connections with wireless devices and exhibiting a range of strange behaviors. That's when you know it's ready for replacement.

Strangely, there doesn't really seem to be a lot of interest in the topic and finding good information on router quality and performance for the average user isn't readily available. My Netgear WND3700 has worked well for the last couple years, but I won't say it's the best one out there. I just don't know, as everyone loves the router they have if it works and hates the one that died on them so what you usually read are just rants or endorsements based on each individual users luck with that particular model.

About the only sure thing out there is the old Linksys WRT 54g if all you need is wireless g. It's dated and obsolete, but built like a tank and I've never heard of a dead one. Most of them are probably still sitting on a shelf only because the user needed to move up to wireless N.

Hi Gary

My modem is a Cisco EPC2425 with wireless built in. I used to have a WRT610N router which is still new but I don't use it any more because I got the modem from my ISP and I prefer everything together

By the way Thanks for all your responds

I found the problem last night. I reset the modem and still I was getting port open and after a while port was closed

The problem is subsonic or maybe my configuration on Subsonic 4.7.beta3. I have subsonic also installed on WHS but the release no the beta and it works fine forwarding the ports with the same configuration I had in Ubuntu machine with Subsonic 4.7.beta3

In beta3 under network you can configure the port forwarding by selecting Automatically configure your router or do it manually, there is check box for auto and another one Access your server over the Internet using an easy-to-remember address

If you check this box for Automatically configure your router you have to enable UPNP

If you check the box for automatically and enable UPNP but also do the port forwarding configuration manually going to your router and adding IP address plus port 4040 here is were the modem was going mad

I just un-ticked check box for Automatically configure your router to allow incoming connections to Subsonic and disabled UPNP in my router, then I forwarded my port and that is it

My port is open and I've been streaming music all day from my Ubuntu machine

Happy days. I was already looking for a modem lat night :)

Very interesting this site but my router is not supported

Not all routers support "Plug and Pray", that's why I recommend not using it in SS in the post I wrote in the Tutorial section. It's a hit or miss deal and if you don't use it and do the manual setup it's a learning process for the average user that has a lot of benefits.

I think one of the things I've enjoyed most about usong SS is that it's taught me a great deal about networking, switches, routers, firewalls, transcoding, and on and on.

Anybody that sticks with it will learn a lot using SS, and there are many knowledgeble people here that are always willing to help find an answer for others having problems.

Great community.
