Postby tezelcelebi » Sat Feb 28, 2009 10:10 am

Hello, I installed v3.6 on an XP SP3 and getting following error:
Access Denied:
You are not authorized to perform the request.

Specifically, Settings menu is not accessible

I have admin rights, java is properly installed. PC that I've installed SUbSonic is a member of domain.

Please help, we want to use this beautiful software.

Sounds more like an issue with permissions in XP than something to do with Subsonic. Do you have a more extensive error message? What system is giving the error message?
Currently without Subsonic due to hardware failure :(

Hi jigsaw,

Well, I have made a standart installation as it is very clear and easy.
c:\subsonic has full rights to everyone
c:\music has full rights to everyone
i also have domain and enterprise admin rights.

Player works well, generates album info, thumbs etc.
Only when I try to get into settings menu it says "You are not authorized to perform the request"
I cant create any user for example, or cant change the admin password.
In log files I cant see anything wrong or any error message.
What permissions shall I have to check or grant to folders ?
If there is any other logs that I can check, can you please tell me ?

So all menus are working except the settings menu?
Is it a stand-alone installation or are you using Tomcat? I am running a stand-alone on Linux myself so I cannot give you exact advise. However you could try resetting the permissions on c:\subsonic and replace permission entries on all child objects and see if that helps?

If you are running a Tomcat installation there are some log-files available though I do not know where the default location for them are in a Windows environment. They're named localhost.log and catalina.log last I checked.

As I said I am currently running a stand-alone installation and the logs are in my case SUBSONIC_HOME/subsonic_sh.log
I would guess you then would be looking at c:\subsonic\subsonic_bat.log or something like that...?

By the way, when the error message appears, is it the whole browser window or just the main frame which shows the error?

Hi jigsaw,

Exactly. All menus except settings menu are working. The error is displayed in red in the center frame.
I replaced permissions on both c:\subsonic and subfolders but it did not help.

This is a standalone installation, as is. no tomcat, no apache. We have no Linux people here, as it is not so common in professional environments. Or otherwise I definitely would try to get a Linux box to run this wonderful software.

I found some messages in c:\program files\subsonic\logs\ but i cant send attachments here. If possible, i would like to share this log files and screen shots with you. I also can provide remote desktop connection to help this sissue resolved. (VNC or TeamViewer)

btw, I tried this software on 3 different PCs and on one 2003 server. the result is same. always same error. I will try to install tomcat (?) on a server and try if it helps.

Thanks a lot for helping.

That is simply incorrect. However, it doesn't matter and I am not getting into one of those discussions :)

You say you have tried the software on 4 different systems. Are you connecting to Subsonic over a network or directly on the host? You should definitely test that you are still experiencing the problem when accessing Subsonic locally.

I can see from the screen-shots that it is Subsonic giving the error message, and not anything else as I initially thought. The only way I have seen to provoke this behavior is when a user without admin-privileges tries to access admin-restricted pages. Normally this is not possible with simple clicks in the browser.

Could you verify that the admin-user as all sufficient privileges in the subsonic database?

Log in to your subsonic as the admin-user
Go to http://localhost/db.view and run this command
Code: Select all
select * from user_role where username = 'admin'

It should return eight rows. Anything else and you've probably found your problem.

Incidentally I managed to get the "not authorized" message myself when trying to access the db.view page as a non-admin user. :)

How to verify ? I dont know even what database it is using.I have no idea with java environment. I enter as admin, admin thats all.

Go to http://localhost/db.view and run this command

I havent seen that place yet. Is there any place to run this SQL command ?

jigsaw, this issue is posibly related with language and regional settings. I know that java does not support correctly languages other than english, correctly. I will try to install a clean XP with US-us regional settings and try to run Subsonic on that machine.

I will let you know.

As I said, the way to verify it is as I noted:

Log in to your subsonic as the admin-user
Go to this URL in your web-browser: http://localhost/db.view and run this command in the text-box which then pops up.
Code: Select all
select * from user_role where username = 'admin'

Hi jigsaw,

nothing pops up.( popup blocker is disabled.)

when I enter the URL it just displays the same message (unauthorized)

I also tested all these on a workgroup machine. it is same.

Nobody is using this software on XP ? Am I the first one ?

This means that the user you are logged in with does not have the correct privileges. If you are logged in with the admin-user it seems that that user somehow lost some of it's privileges.

To reset the admin-user you need to do the following:

1. Stop subsonic
2. locate the folder "db" in your subsonic_home ( probably c:\subsonic\db ) and rename it or delete it.
3. Start subsonic

That should recreate the db with default permissions.
Note! All your settings will be lost if you do this

Now you should be able to log in with the user admin with password admin.

Hope this helps..

Edit: Really weird that this happens when you say you've tried to install on four different systems.. You are using a default install downloaded from the Subsonic-download links?

hi jigsaw,

although I've tried this before, i retried again. same. no changes :(

i downloaded the executable from this link : http://subsonic.sourceforge.net/download.php

i even tried with google chrome, if this was a browser incompatibility issue. same results.

if you wish, i can make remote desktop connection available for you.

thanks for your efforts and help
