vanity URL

Postby thorndike » Sun Sep 30, 2012 10:45 pm

Folks,

My vanity URL has stopped working. I can ping myname.subsonic.org and it will successfully return a response ( 66.49.215.227). Unfortunately, when I go to IPzebra.com or whatismyip.com I get the address 72.66.5.134 returned. I have seen others having this issue, but have been unable to find the directions to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The ping response IP means nothing as that is just the IP address of the SS redirect server (and the main website)
Go to settings/network and hit save - this will update the server with your IP address.

I've tried that as well, but the vanity url still fails.

Go to http://canyouseeme.org and verify that the port you are using for Subsonic is actually open.

99% of these issues are due to not properly setting up a forwarding rule on the router. If you do not get verification from the site above that the port is open, you will NEVER reach Subsonic from outside your network.

GJ51, I verified that port 7070 is available, and it is.

Also, what I can't figure out is that this has worked flawlessly for a couple years now. I haven't changed any of my router forwarding rules at all. I know that in the past, Verizon had assigned me a different IP address when they replaced their equipment, but subsonic kept right on working. So I am not completely sure the problem is on my end and if it isn't, then how do I go about fixing it?

I recently set up SSL on my WAR installation of the standard Subsonic 4.7 final and it seems to be having issues when I have the SSL enabled. This may be a similar issue. Are you on ssl - have you tried it with ssl disabled?

I'm on verizon fios - have you checked the port forwarding on the router, my Verizon router has to be set up manually and will not set port forwarding with PlugandPray.

EDIT: SSL on WAR issue solved.

Well, I have checked the port forwarding rules on the FIOS router and 7070 is forwarded correctly. I am not using ssl.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated as I am going to be out of town and would REALLY like to be able to reach my server again.

There can only be a few things that prevet you from reaching the server.

1. Firewall on the local host.
2. Incorrect port forwarding rule.
3. Redirection service from subsonic.org is not using your current ip:port#

That's about it. If you log onto you Subsonic site and go to Settings/Network and hit save it will transmit your current external ip address and the port number that SS is using to the redirection service and return:

Status: Servername.subsonic.org responded successfully.

If you don't get that something isn't right.

You can test the port to see if it's open on canyouseeme.org to see if it is open, but if it's not the port that Subsonic is using then it can be misleading. The port may be open, but it may also not be the port that Subsonic is listening to.

If you send me you external ip address and the port that Subsonic is using and send me your vanity url in a pm I'll be happy to test it for you to see what happens from outside your network.

I've also seen instances where all was cured by just rebooting the router - worth a try.

An answer like this doesn't tell us anything.

What message do you get when you hit Save?

http://72.66.5.134:7070/login.view

I just typed this in and it brings up a Subsonic login page. Assuming it's yours, you can certainly use this address while you're OTR even if you don't get the Vanity URL fixed.

Sorry for the delay, I've been on the road. When I hit save on the network page, it says that I am properly registered, but then the following message appears:

Status: xxxxxxx.subsonic.org is registered, but could not connect to it. (ConnectTimeoutException)
