Some folders not found

Postby TheIndiePlaylists » Thu Oct 04, 2012 2:59 am

I have been running Subsonic for awhile without any issues but lately the last dozen albums I have dropped into my D drive (where Sub points to) are not being shown even after scanning the folders. All of my other music is there but the last few are not showing up at all even if I make them into their own media file in settings like D:\Subsonic\SatelliteStories pointing Sub directly at that folder. When choosing that folder from the drop down menu on the left nothing is there. But if I do the same with an older file it works ok. Is this a glitch with the new version? Thoughts on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, so I figured a work around for this. This has something to do with the Subsonic scan not detecting these folders. If I create a new media folder and direct Sub to it then pull it up from the drop down menu it force Sub to locate that folder and keep it in the directory. I then can go back and remove it from the drop down menu and Sub now recognizes it as part of the overall directory. Weird.

I just had a similar issue today where we added a new folder with a couple of new albums in it and they wouldn't show in the library no matter what we tried. So I then cut and pasted the folder to a different server that has a mirror of the primary library on it, scanned the mirror from a different instance of Madsonic and it was picked up. I then recopied the folder back to the primary library and rescanned the Madsonic instance on that server and it then showed up.

I have no idea why that happened, but it's now fixed. Only problem now is wondering if there are other folders that I haven't visited in a long time that aren't being shown.

By the way - just noticed your username so ut's only fair to share that it was a download of the new Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic zeroes Album. Good stuff.

Multiple people have reported this, so I think it is a bug with the default Subsonic scanning. BTW GJ51: are you still running a MusicCabinet instance? Did it get picked up there?

I'll try a scan on Music Cabinet to see if I get the same thing. You use a different set up if I recall. Do you think that using the db on your mod would result in not having the same issue?

EDIT: Rescan worked fine on Music Cabinet, but this scans my mirror, not the primary library that originally had the problem.

If it happens again I'll scan on Music Cabinet before I fix it to see if MC picks it up whe SS doesn't. I first noticed the problem on an install of Madsonic and then confirmed it on my reference Subsonic install. Sorry I didn't think of testing MC before I did the recopy.

I've built my own media scanner, so whether it works or not would indicate if the problem is with the default Subsonic scanner or something completely different (folders not being available from the OS to the user running Subsonic etc). It's just an interesting test as these problems are hard to reproduce and now you happened to run into it.

EDIT: OK, thanks for testing! Not sure what can be concluded though.

Hi All,

I've just started to use subsonic and it is fantastic. I began by adding my main music directory and it worked flawlessly.

I decided to add some more directories with video etc., each have multiple sub directories and it seems pretty hit and miss whether these are loaded during a media scan. No errors occur but it doesn't scan through enough files, it is obviously missing many many directories.

It sounds like it might be the same problem as others have described in this thread ... I wounder has anyone got to the bottom of this or does anyone have a work around?

Thanks

I'm having this same problem since I updated to 4.7 but it seems to be specific to new artists. If I add an artist that didn't exist prior to the upgrade and scan my mediafolder there's no trace of them in the artist list or the search. If I add a new album to an existing artist I can see the new album just fine under that artist and it shows up in the search results. The log doesn't really tell me anything either, has anyone figured out a fix?

Oy, don't even get me started on this. I have been dealing with this issue (in one form or another) since I started using Subsonic. Incredibly frustrating.

Up until 4.7, I had the case of new Albums in existing Artist folders being picked up, but not new Artists. Since upgrading to 4.7, nothing new shows up at all. Under any circumstances. Unless I do a fresh install and start from scratch. Unfortunately, I'm having to do this fairly frequently, since my db keeps crashing. Will be downgrading to 4.6 later today, where at least I knew a few workarounds.

Go to settings

Uncheck any directories in "Media Folders" that have folders or files that are not showing.

Save

Click on Clean-up database

Scan media folders

Recheck all folders

Save

Rescan

Enjoy music :)

If your db keeps crashing something is not installed properly. I'm on Windows, so I can't vouch for other OS installations, but both the WAR version on Tomcat and the standard Windows install run rock solid when Java is properly installed before the Subsonic installation. I run the latest Java 7 and version 4.7 of Subsonic, Madsonic, and Music Cabinet. All run rock solid 24/7 without any crashes.

I'm not sure what is happening with all these db and java error crash reports, or if they are all non - Windows installations, but I can confirm that both the WAR on Tomcat and the standard Windows install run more stable and perform better than any previous version of Subsonic I've used.

I don't think this should be blamed on the users. Subsonic 4.7/Madsonic uses the hsqldb version 1.8.0.7 which was released in 2008. There has been updates to it (1.8.0.10), current version is 2.2.9. These updates address bugs like what's being seen in Subsonic - for example, intermittent NullPointerExceptions. There's also the "missing folders" issue that forces people to clean up / mess around with their dbs.

The quality of your end product totally depend on the components you put into it. That's why I've written my own media scanner in MusicCabinet and store everything in PostgreSQL instead of the old hsqldb. It makes the setup more complicated but I believe the quality is better. Or at least, every time something goes wrong, I normally have to blame myself, not my choice of database.

I'm not blaming anyone for anything. I'm merely pointing out that I have several variations of Subsonic 4.7 running on Windows using the latest Java 7 release and have both the WAR version on Tomcat 6 and the standard Windows installation running 24/7 without encountering any major problems.

I also run 3 variations of the Android app that maximize the features of each server mod. I have one set up for standard Subsonic 4.7, one is for Music Cabinet, and the third uses Madsonic. All 3 apps are running simultaneously on the same Samsung Galaxy SIII phone.

I'm not pointing all this out for any other reason than to assure forum readers that Subsonic is indeed a very stable and easy to use program when it is properly installed - at least on Windows. I don't use any other OS so I won't speak for those versions, but I do know Linux users that say they are not having major problems either.

I don't have any way of knowing what anyone is or isn't doing that may cause their particular installation to fail, especially when most posters don't even describe what platform they are on in any detail, as if OS isn't even important. I've spent hours helping someone try to figure out why they have problems only to finally be told 3 days later that they are behind a reverse proxy server with a full gainer and a half twist reverse back flip and are double NAt'ed.

Then there's the phone users who ask for help with the problems on their phone app and can't for the life of them figure out why Subsonic won't work - must be something terribly wrong with the server or the app - can't understand why it doesn't work until you ask them if the phone is rooted and what rom they are using. OK so the same Subsonic app works fine on my phone but it doesn't work on your's after you just installed the latest CM10 overnight drop from XDA, but you think there's something wrong with the app?

Yes - there are some issues and bugs with the latest Subsonic. But they are MINOR.

This is the best performing most stable release of Subsonic yet. I'm not going back to an earlier version for any reason. The Madsonic and Music Cabinet mods are both extraordinary improvements over the base application and i currently only maintain one standard Subsonic instance merely for reference. There's no better time to be a Subsonic user.

I've seen this forum go through periods like this in the past where there are many users that sound as if there's something wrong with Subsonic and it needs to be fixed. The reality is that in most cases the user isn't installing something correctly or has a configuration issue that needs to be worked out. The last time I wrote a diatribe like this I went so far as to actually setup a Linux install and get it running to prove to some users that whatever it was we were discussing actually worked contrary to their claims that the problem was all with Subsonic.

Don't worry - I have no interest in repeating that demonstration. I'm not a Linux guy and have no interest in becoming one.

The unfortunate reality is that most forum posters, don't actually read very carefully (especially if they are the product of the public school education system here in the US) and even if they read what you write, they often discount what you tell them and assume that your advice and suggestions are not on point and of little or no use to them. Then they'll come back a day or two later and re-ask what you explained 3 days ago in a slightly different way as if you didn't cover that ground already.

I'm not blaming anyone for anything - I'm just an observer of human nature and do what I can to share a few things I've learned interacting with other users in the close to 2700 posts. The point is that in most posts you often don't get the critical information that tells you what the actual source of the problem is, you usually are just getting a description of the symptoms and it most often takes a bit of poking and proding to get the user to divulge enough information in detail to actually get to the point where you can fix the problem.

I don't see anything going on with the latest release of Subsonic that's any different from past experience. Java, database errors and app problems are usually installation/configuration errors - just blaming Subsonic isn't going to get it running for you.
