Android 3.5 App Released 10/18/2012

Postby nunya » Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:06 pm

Didn't see any announcements so just posting the info.

Received 2 updates last few weeks for Android app I'm pretty sure it's version 3.5 but couldn't find any documentation.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... rch_result

What's in this version:
o Major facelift!
o Detect Bluetooth connect/disconnect in ICS.
o Ad supported.
o Use Wifi lock.

previous updated quick scroll in playlists.

I see ads on player view, that seems to be only issue with some of reviews for people who donated for server are seeing ads.
I would assume there would be a place to enter your key in app to remove ads or it would somehow check registered server address or maybe an ad free .apk version posted in forum as I'm sure most forum posters donated for server.
Not a big deal but would like to remove I'm sure it doesn't help battery life serving ads

My only issue is playlist view shows multiple playlists with same name different content as I update playlists quite often and subsonic doesn't rescan playlists when doing rescan so I have to import it for it to show,
it shows old and newly updated playlists, but that's a minor issue & more to do with desktop software.

Like the look for most part but no different themes to select from and widget on home page has much smaller thumbnail for album art then previously.

Many thanks for the quick scroll on playlist view been wanting that feature & unless I'm at home on home network when pressing library view I always get a network time out this has alwasy happened though, have over 4,000 albums......

and it takes to long to populate I guess would love for library list/view to be cached if possible

AW: Android 3.5 App Released 10/18/2012

Postby wannabe_nerd » Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:57 pm

Personally I think the old version of the app was much better :-/

I hate the ics actionbar at the top of the screen ( which fool at google invented this ?!) It is just silly to place all the important buttons of an app at the most far away spot on the screen

I loved all the buttons at the BOTTOM of my screen where they could be pressed easily. I know they are still there but.the icons where much easier to use.

Where did the diffferent skins go? The blue one is ugly imho.

And the most wanted feature (for me) : free handling of the currently playing songs especially rearrange instead of shuffle them is still not implemented.

Last but not least there now are ads in my subsonic android app although u donated for my subsonic server installation. However this could be a bug.

After the new server-version I have to downgrade my android app too O___o

It's not a really big deal but o think subsonic goes a step backwards :-(

Maybe I'm alone with this opinion, but I feel that way.

However I reinstalled the old app-version again.

Nevertheless Subsonic (both the server and the apps) are the best pieces of software I've ever seen and I think sindre is a really great developer.

I just find it really annoying to have to pay again !!! I already paid for the server once and have been using the app for a while on Android without seeing Ads. Now, you spring up ads on your users! very bad.

Not a fan of the new skin: it's too dark, textured backgrounds look bad with lists on top, and the new status bar icon looks amateurish. Also the paid upgrade is totally broken. Some of the comments in Google Play suggest reinstalling, but I'd rather not have to reconfigure and/or risk having my substantial cache wiped out. I must say that I agree with everyone who considers this a step backwards.

I'd pay without thinking for a support of extsdcard on a Samsung S3 as storage.

In my limited research so far (I only now just got home from work), I notice an inconsistency on the new app's page:
"Server software (€10/$15 for lifetime license; free trial) available for Windows, Mac, Linux on
subsonic.org. The app itself is ad-supported, with the option to buy ad removal."
This may be why users report 'paying for the server' when I have maintained the server has always been free, but APPS usage after the 30-day trial require a donation 'to the project' per subsonic.org:
"Please note that most of the apps are made by third-party developers, and are not maintained by the
Subsonic project. Some apps are commercial, while some are available for free.
Also note that after a 30-day trial period you need a license key to use the apps. You get a license key by
giving a donation to the Subsonic project. The license never expires and is valid for all current and
future apps. By donating you also get other benefits; see info box on the right."

Needless to say, the 'info box on the right' says:
"Donate
Love Subsonic? Support us by giving a donation and enjoy premium features like:

Apps for Android, iPhone, WP 7, PlayBook, Roku and more*.
Video streaming.
Share your media on Facebook, Twitter, Google+.
***No ads.***
Your personal server address: yourname.subsonic.org
The suggested donation amount is €20, but you can give any amount you like. €10, €15, €20, €25, €30
After completing the payment you'll receive a license key by email which unlocks the premium features."

The new language in the Play App page now suggests the model is server-based insofar as donation payment, and the app is more like any other app in the Play store, with an ad-supported free version, and ad-free premium. I think it is a natural evolution, and may be advantageous for Sindre to go this route now (recall android/iOS was a glimmer in the eye when this project was born), but I can clearly understand why users are off-put or even angry about the change...it IS a change, and it IS confusing, even for those of us who think we understand it. ;) Clarity about the change should have been better communicated, and the relevant texts on the Play App page and subsonic.org pages made consistent, setting user expectations accordingly. When it's all said and done, I'm still happy to support the project that has fulfilled my years-long dream of my music being instantly available to me anywhere, and I want to see it prosper. End of my mini-rant! :P 8)

This is all well and good for new users; but this constitutes a breach of trust to many of us who have supported this development effort with multiple contributions, both in money voluntarily donated and years of free "customer service" support provided to new users here in the forum.

To add insult - there was never any mention that this was in the works or an explanation of this major paradigm shift.

There are still unanswered questions that I think we all deserve. Is this now the fee we will have to pay over and over again every time there is an upgrade to the app - or is this a one time fee - like what we thought we had already paid? What credibility is there if we are told this is a one time fee if we were already under the impression that the use of an add free app was already a right we had paid for previously? I would be far more understanding if Sindre had just made an announcement in the forum that this was something he had to do here in the forum, rather than just dropping this on us as a surprise through the PlayStore.

For me this isn't a matter of $. It's about breach of trust and credibility. I will no longer provide further financial support as long as this is the way I am treated for my years of loyal support of this project. I will support modders who may even not have apps that are as good as the current Subsonic app as long as I am respected and appreciated as a supporter of the effort.

Unfortunately, I can no longer feel that way regarding Subsonic for the way this has been so poorly handled.

I'd like answers to those questions too, but 'breach of trust and credibility' isn't my take..he simply made the app like the vast majority of apps already in the market. I simply chose to go ad-free...many apps I only use because they're free/ad-supported, and this is an app I use constantly, and wanted ad-free. I am curious why some Play users indicate 4 or more dollars, when mine was $2.76...something fishy there too! :)

I'm also a little bit upset. I paid €20 to use the server with the Subsonic App beyond the 30 days trial period. And now I have to pay again to use the app with a new design (while I prefer the previous design)? Going back to the previous version until this gets fixed.

His "simply making the app like the vast majority of apps already in the market" doen't excuse fundamenatally changing the terms of service and the benefits to the license holders without prior notification. When I enter into an agreement with someone, I honor it. I expect others to act in the same way or I terminate my relationship with them. Although, I intend to give Sindre time to explain his actions, I am currently not hopeful that this is forthcoming and in all likelihood this may be my last post.

If others have as shallow an understanding of ethics and what constitutes fairness in altering prior agreements as you, I encourage them to pony up there $. Of course this fee will pay for all your devices you register it on ... today anyway ... we have no way of knowing what tomorrows change will bring as it is demonstrated here that the author reserves the right to just unilaterally change that at any time. If that's the situation you want to deal with you are free to do so. I'll take my money and support elsewhere.

What the heck? Virtually no feature additions, just a new theme, plus ads? Why would anyone ever want to upgrade to this version?
