iSub on iPhone: FLAC -> MP3 : limited to 128 kbps ?

Postby webvan » Thu Nov 01, 2012 3:56 pm

Sorry if this has been asked before but I can up empty handed while searching.

So here goes, when streaming FLAC files to my iPhone using iSub I've noticed that they are shown as "MP3 128kbps" even though there is no bandwidth limit (320 kbps MP3s stream at 320kbps) and after looking at the transcoding settings (I use the default settings), I see : ffmpeg -i %s -ab %bk -v 0 -f mp3 -
With %b being the bitrate and while I haven't found an explanation I assume that "%bk" is the maximum allowed bitrate?

Does this mean that the "mp3 128 kbps" display isn't the actual bitrate but maybe some display limitation/bug ?

Thanks !

I don't know if this has changed in 4.7, but in 4.6 it behaved like this:
If you set max bitrate to unlimited, the default bitrate is used, which is 128k.

Therefore you have to set your max bitrate setting to your desired value, unlimited really means low quality.

Using 320kbs as the setting on the client does indeed seem to do the trick. Seems that FLAC conversion should go to the max available but maybe you'd need to setup a special profile for FLAC only.
