Subsonic Package for Synology NAS

I installed the mashup version and all appeared well for about 10-15 minutes and then the application froze up. It required me to re-boot the NAS box and do an uninstall and clean install of 4.7. 4.7 standard runs fine. I'm ruinnin a DS2413+ with DSM4.1 - 2647.

Anyone else having this problem? Is it possibly a memory issue? Any ideas?

As luck would have it, my new NAS is a DS213+ which has a Freescale QorIQ P1022 processor.

Is it difficult to make a package for this?

I just wanted to show my appreciation for your work. I bought a Synology NAS, the DS213, simply to run Subsonic and your port for it. I am on a budget, and for the price it was the best processor/RAM I could find. It installed fine, and although Im am fairly happy its just a little slower running than I had hoped. When choosing a folder, the CPU peaks, and there is at least a 2-4 second delay before it actually shows up. I understand that the CPU is not comparable to a desktop CPU, it surprises me that such a fairly basic and non-complex operation should be that CPU intensive and also RAM intensive - its simply showing text. I have turned off transcoding, and all files are MP3 files, so that shouldnt use much CPU either. Are my experiences common, or is there something that can be done to improve the overall user experience? Either way - it works fine and I am very happy that you took the time to do your work. I've written about this topic several times. Ask yourself what you would do if you were trying to bring a cost competitive product to market that was designed for a single purpose. Would you really put a more expensive CPU and more ram into the product than you needed to do the functions that the device was designed for? All you would be doing would be to cut your profit margins. Yes Subsonic will run with varying degrees of success, but that's not what these devices are designed for.

I was an early adopter of NAS and still have my 10/100 Linksys EGF80 NAS. As rhe years went by, I realized I could build servers that were more flexible and powerful that could act as storage servers and so way more than a NAS. It was a realization similar to the years way back when tape back up drives were popular, but expensive, and I would ask, "Why not just put in a second hard drive?" and everybody would get this kind of blank look on their face indicating that they really hadn't given it much thought.

You can buy an Antec 300 case for $59 and DIY packages from Tiger Direct for $200 that will have a quad core CPU 4GB ram and a 1TB hard deive that will run circles around a NAS, have tons of expandibility, and make Subsonic run snappy for everything but hi-res video. And it only takes a scredriver to do. OS? You can still get WHS 2011 for $49 - a true steal and one that everyone should probably grab before MS kills it.

Gary - sure. And I am aware of these issues. In my case its a matter of space and noise. Ive run my home computer on Shuttle machines for the past 7 years due to the mall form factor and noise alone. And yes, I could have built a computer to run it without any problem - but for me it wasn't really what I wanted. However, I thought that the processor would be able to handle a fairly easy (from what I thought) server without much issue. Either way, it does, and so far im fairly happy with it.

Does anyone know if its possible to disable the encryption (HTTPS) when running the server on the Synology? When running on windows you can disable this quite easily, but I dont know how to do it on the Synology distribution...

Thanks for the feedback. I tried finding the Faqs you have written regarding this, but I couldnt find any. However I have edited subsonic.sh to reflect the changes, but no change. Stopped and restarted the server. When I try to go to :4040 I get an SSL error; ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

I used vi to edit the file, I dont know much about telnet or Linux to be honest, so I am a little in over my head I think.

Sorry for beeing away for a while again...

You are right the subsonic.sh is located under /volumeX/@appstore/Subsonic
simply edit it using vi (pre installed) or any other editor you installed (I prefer nano btw.)
Change the https port to 0 and save the edited file
Restart Subsonic
The DSM link will work because it always points at localhost:4040 which is the default http link.

Hi Eric. Thanks for the reply - I did try this, but alas no change. Could you show an edited version of the .sh file to see if its done properly? Would be great. On an unrelated note, do you know why it takes about 5-10 seconds to view the playlists when you create one? This is on a 212 box. I am also unable to rename the playlists - nothing changes when I make alterations to it in Subsonic.

Hi,

I'm trying to install this on DS412+, but installation stalls after I click "apply" with the message: "Failed to install the package. Error:Cannot Start Subsonic during install". This happens irrespective of whether the box "Run after Installation" is ticked or not.

After that, Subsonic appears in the installed section of the package center, but the button that is normally "Action" says only "Install". I can't apparently install it or uninstall it. Has anybody any idea how to get past this?
