Possible to shuffle by music folder or genre?

Postby Blindfish » Sat Nov 24, 2012 4:11 am

I'm new to Subsonic and DSub and am still experimenting and learning my way around. Is it possible to shuffle songs only from my "music" folder? When I press the shuffle button on my phone I get songs as well as TV shows, radio broadcasts and movies in my "playing" list. Can I limit the shuffling to only the "music" or other selected folder?

Secondly, is it possible to shuffle music based on genre only? I'd like to select "jazz", for example, and be able to shuffle within that genre of music. Currently I'll get jazz, heavy metal, classical or whatever all mixed in together and it can be quite jarring sometimes to hear something not quite in the same mood as the previous few songs.

For DSub yes the shuffling is based off of whatever root folder you have selected. On subsonic it is not. And sadly I haven't quite gotten around too genre based shuffling but it is in the works and I would expect it sometime in the next month

In addition to shuffle by genre, year would be good too.

Yep, the API supports year ranges and genre so I am thinking I will add support for those two. I can't really do anything else without additional API support though.

I had a further thought about this. Is it or would it be possible to shuffle based on multiple genres, e.g. "jazz", "blues" and "vocalese" and have songs based on these three selections. Alternatively, if I were to have multiple genres in the MP3's ID tag could/would DSub be able use them and select tunes accordingly?

I'm just using this Subsonic API. I doubt it supports multiple genre's and I don't know how it handles multiple genre's in the id tags. The update is already out for it so you can just try it out :D

Hi, it looks like this got implemented in the last update? I went to do my usual ramdom shuffle and a box popped up wanting to know parameters to shuffle by. My music is not that well tagged so for me, this breaks Dsub. May i have just the random shuffle back??
Thanks

Just click ok...you don't have to enter anything. They aren't required fields.

Hmm I just tried it from a fresh install and it works fine for me. Did you try giving it a second? Sometimes it takes a second to start returning data for me.

Curious, did you do a reboot of the phone, app, or server? I'm wondering if somehow you got stuck in a state where the shuffle buffer wasn't being filled properly. Let me know if it happens again.

rebooted that phone, i should know to think of that first. Shuffle buffer problem seems right, could have been Link2sd that was blocking it as I use that to keep my apps on sd card .\Thanks again

Hello, I have recently set up Subsonic and most everything is working well. I have also purchased DSub for three different devices / users and am very happy with the application. However, I am having the same issue reported in this thread concerning Random playlists not working. When I select Random, a list of random tracks does appear, but when I select Play at the top of the screen, I just get an empty playlist.

- I am running the latest version of Dsub and of Subsonic on the server
- All my mobile devices are running Jelly Bean
- All devices exhibit the above behavior
- I tried rebooting the devices and rescanning the media folders in Subsonic
- My Subsonic server is not yet licensed, would that have an impact on this?

I also noticed where some users reported that a drop down list of additional random choices (by genre, etc) appears. That doesn't happen on my devices either - is that something that was taken out of this latest release?

Thanks for any help you can give me with this issue, which would make this a perfect replacement for Audiogalaxy.

The random albums not being able to click play all is a different issue from the one the other user was reporting. Someone just reported the issue you are having the other day and I will look at it. I guess I never try to play all random albums. I usually use the shuffle all function from the main screen or I go down to a random album and play a single album and both those work.

As for the second issue I haven't heard anyone else getting the set of extra options intermittently. Are you sure you are pressing the same shuffle icon on the same tab on all devices. For example pressing shuffle on the now playing tab won't bring up the menu it just shuffles the now playing list. Try pressing the shuffle icon on the first tab in Dsub to see if you only get the menu on some.
