You can't connect to an "unpaid" server with the android client (except in the first 30 days, as a trial). So every server would be a "paid" server.

Sindre wasn't making enough money to support his development efforts so he added a second revenue stream to the process... either the ads or pay to remove the ads. This is separate and in addition to the money that you pay to license the server so it can accept API connections past 30 days.

and this would be a 100% successful business model! Who could ask for anything more than that??

Most businesses that need more revenue would raise license prices for new customers that come in, not change the terms for existing paid customers. We don't need to rehash since Sindre has already addressed this by allowing his loyal licensed users an add free Android app, however it is a branch since it's not maintained in G Play. The question here is how to capture the revenue from the users that haven't paid while still providing the great service and ease of use to the paid customers. As the developer, Sindre can do whatever he wants with the app to address this. He could even allow 10 licensed Android clients per licensed server key (which would be a compromise of the initial terms, but maybe acceptable to the community). The options are there and I am just waiting to see what happens next.

People buying android licenses for smartphones is fine I can see doing that to bring in more money and that I'm NOT against. But limiting the subsonic paid server users is certainly NOT acceptable. Not only is doing such a thing unethical since paid server users have already paid but then how do you call Subsonic "Donation Based" as doing such a thing would certainly cross the line. I have no issue with putting in my fair share but I refuse to be nickel and dimed to death. I paid for the server and If I want 20,000 people on my server I should be able to do that without incurring additional costs. Backing a copy of v4.7 now in case such a moronic thing does happen I can stay with the current version. The Subsonic server needs to stay completely unlimited and untouched in that regard for current paid and future users.

However, what I could see is creating extension packs as Subsonic is still very limited in many areas. Example a video pack that would allow better playback of videos with more format support through the subsonic web server. A music pack that would allow for flac playback as subsonic web interface only supports flash playback and only MP3 and AAC are currently supported. Better Podcast support could be another pack that could be created since video podcasts aren't supported and podcast abilities in general are quite limited. Heck that's 3 packs that could be created and lots of revenue. That's that's a lot better than trying to find new ways to sale the same thing and it doesn't step on any toes or pushes the line of being unethical.

There's actually a bit more to it than just a skin as I recall. Generally speaking most of the app versions are a response to changes needed in order to be functional with the next version of Android. The current Subsonic app is the "ICS version" if memory serves, and I can confirm that it works fine with ICS but has a few hiccups with Jelly Bean.

Even the modded apps are still trying to iron out the apps for use on Jelly Bean and hopefully there's an answer out there.

There is consensus that the last release of the app was poorly done and the user community response was such that the dev admitted as much and made apologies to the community. Generally there was agreement that we all do things that aren't always well thought out and appropriate steps were taken to make amends.

I won't beat the horse any further as he is already dead. I'll leave it to you to read the entire thread as the developers view and response is a few pages back.

So, I have paid/donated for the Android side client and all has been great since day 1. However, in the last couple of days, ads have started appearing on my SS app and I'm not sure what to do. I don't mind donating (in fact I've been happy to do so, given the fantastic nature of this app), however, I'm not sure why the ads have come back. Does anyone have any suggestions? My experience with Sindre and SS in general have been that he is ethical and takes care of his customers, so in no way do I think this is some type of intentional money grab. I just think something quirky has happened.

Thoughts, suggestions and solutions would be very appreciated. Thanks all.

I concur with huff009 As the android is busted as of the last update. I run a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and before the update I noticed that on every song there was a .3-.5 skip in every song I played. I noticed this on my Nexus 7 also. but now when using the latest version another and/or related issue has occurred which is it is very slow downloading and cause songs to stop due to the need of constant rebuffering or stalls altogether. My friend who lives 1100 miles away has the same issue with the android app. Also its not my internet connection as when he and several others try from the computers then everything is fine. When I referred to skipping I did mention this about the issue in jellybean 6 months ago but it looks like Sendre was more interested in finding ways to nickel and dime his customers rather than fixing issues. I wonder if he'll dismiss the new issue like he did the last issue and pretend it isn't happening?, I almost bet he will.

Dsub works great with Subsonic. I use the Madsonic server and app and don't have any problems on my note 2.
