It's really pretty simple. Go to Settings/Players. Click the radio button for "External player with playlist" then enter a name for the player in the box. I called mine "External", I know, very creative, but yo can call yours anything you want, maybe even WMP. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and save.

When you select the external player it will call the default player on your desktop. Make sure WMP is defined as the default if that's what you want to use. I also suggest installing the klite codec pak for your system so that it can play whatever you throw at it.

How do you set "the default player on your desktop"? I've done what you describe here, but anytime I try to play something, it just plays within the browser.

Go to Settings/Players. Select any player associate with your username. Click on "Clone Player". Next select the External player with playlist button. In the player name box, rename the player (External, WMP, VLC, or anything you like that tells you it's the external player). Scroll down and hit the Save button. That defines the use of the default desktop player in Subsonic.

In Windows 7, go to control panel, default programs, Set your default program, and select which player you want to use as your default player. If you use Windows Media Player, be sure to download the klite codec pack to get the most compatibility. There are similar ways to define the default player in most OS's but I've been on Win7 for so long, please don't ask me how to do the others. :D

Welcome to Subsonic.

Mark,

I've had problems using Chrome/exteernal player as well. I don't know why. It seems to only work for me with IE 9 and WMP. I haven't spent a lot of time on it as I don't use the external player feature and it seems a bit buggy.

Let me know if there's anything else you need.

Gary

I can't say much for Chrome because I use firefox and it works well for the music bit but playing video in it does not work. So i've just been using FF for music and whatever I need to do and then IE for video.

I use the External Player with Playlist option and whenever I click "play" it just prompts me to download a playlist. I save it then double-click on it and it opens in WinAmp.

What you might be missing is that when you have all the files you want to play in your "in-browser" playlist, make sure you select the External Player with Playlist player (For ex. if you named it EXT, make sure to select EXT in the drop down box on the left above the playlist). Once you get that set, click "Play" and it should either automatically open your External Player of choice or prompt you to download a playlist (.m3u) . Just go to where you saved the playlist and double-click on it and your good to go. Sometimes it might automatically open the media player after you choose where to save it, most of the time it does not for me.
