What about videos?

Postby skullface » Thu Jan 10, 2013 12:14 pm

Hi,
First, very good job !

I try your mod since a few weeks and I like a lot every new features.
My problem is that in classic subsonic I used to access my videos, mostly with the search field.

What are your plan about videos and pictures ? Is MUSICCabinet going to be for music only ?

Browsing by folder solves a part of the problem but it would be perfect if searchbox includes folder and file name.
Why not also display folder.jpg in file mode?

Glad you like it! I don't have any immediate plans on adding further support for videos / pictures. As the name indicates, this tool is meant for music. I believe in concentrating on one thing and doing it well rather than doing a bit of everything and coming out mediocre. So both videos and the old file based browsing mode are low priority to me. Not the answer you wanted but that's how it is.

I might have missed something here .... MusicCabinet does not play or transcode video? If true I need to think more about making the change. Presently I have about 600 GB of movies and they play fine in Subsonic. If MC doesn't handle video I would need to find a solution.

I also have Plex installed and the eye candy full GUI is nice, but it does not perform as well as Subsonic for streaming video or music. For those of you using MC, what are you using for Video? I would prefer OSX solution but I would consider other options.

Thanks!

You can stream video using both the web interface and apps. It's just slightly more clunky and you cannot search for video files. It's left as a reminiscent from original Subsonic but not prioritized when adding new functionality.

"you cannot search for video files" - So with MC when browsing for a movie in the left panel is your entire library displayed or can you display just MOVIES and then browse your Movies only? I am guessing you would have to view entire library but it is not clear. I totally understand this is called Music Cabinet for a reason but the video piece is important to me.

If it tuns out you have to scroll through entire library I would still give MC a try just for music only. Would there be a problem running both Subsonic (for video only) and MC (music only)?

I am not complaining, just trying to get an understanding of MC before I make the change from Subsonic. Thanks again.

Also I had no problem paying for Subsonic and as well as you support MC, once running I would be happy to donate to you. MC sounds awesome.

In MusicCabinet, only artists with albums are displayed in the left column (no matter what your file structure looks like). There's a simple file tree explorer (reached by clicking the "File Tree" icon in the top menu) so that you can navigate within your media folders and find your videos. It is possible to run multiple Subsonic instances, just make sure they use different settings folders, ports etc.

Thank you for answering.
I will see if I can find a workaround.
It still sad for the file search, this could be useful for bad tagged songs.

I agree it would make sense to add an option to search for file names in the advanced search. But that'll only return matching songs, not video files. (MusicCabinet only indexes tagged music files, not meta data of video files. So you can't search for videos with a certain width/height for example, while you can search for a variety of properties for music files, like composer, disc number, track genre etc)

What happen if a song has no artist ?

If it is optionally possible to save file with no meta in library then do file search I am good to go :-) It good for bad tagged song and for videos.

The media scanner ignores music files that lack artist/track tags, see viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11018&p=50401
