[solved]W2k8Srvr Media folder not found with non local drive

First my specs:

Windows 2008 R2 server standard SP1

4.7 (build 3106) – September 12, 2012
jetty-6.1.x, java 1.6.0_27, Windows Server 2008 R2 (26.3 MB / 36.7 MB)

I just set up Subsonic for the first time ever(so presumably no legacy issues) and am unable to successfully get the app to scan a folder that does not reside on a physical drive. I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps from multiple threads/wiki's, etc. to no avail. This includes configuring the Subsonic service to use the same account(in the administrators group) that I log into the machine with, that when logged in I have zero issues accessing any of the drive/files/folders that I am attempting to configure in the Media folders section of the Subsonic UI.

As the topic states this issue seems to specifically apply to drives/files/folders that are on a drive that is not physically attached to the machine. This conclusion is based on the following steps I've tried to get the Media Folders set up.

Things I have tried:

1. Map a media folder to a folder that is on the local c: drive. Result: Success
2. Map a media folder to a folder that is on a locally attached portable USB drive. Result: Success
3. Map a media folder that is on a drive mapped from a network shared drive. Result: 'No media folders found. Please change the settings.' message at the top of the Subsonic Web UI page and the 'Folder not found' next to the configuration for this shared folder on the Media Folders page in the Subsonic web UI.
4. Use the subst command to create a virtual drive mapped to a folder on the c: drive. Result: 'No media folders found. Please change the settings.' message at the top of the Subsonic Web UI page and the 'Folder not found' next to the configuration for this shared folder on the Media Folders page in the Subsonic web UI.
5. Map a media folder that is in a UNC path from a network shared drive. Result: 'No media folders found. Please change the settings.' message at the top of the Subsonic Web UI page and the 'Folder not found' next to the configuration for this shared folder on the Media Folders page in the Subsonic web UI.

I am at a loss. Can anyone help?

Anyone have any suggestions? Is it not possible to use subsonic on a drive that's not local to the server?

How are you listing the media folders?

Are you using \\server\share\path, or are you mapping a drive to \\server\share\ and specifying in media folders X:\path ?

Not sure if the first method will work (it doesn't work with the Linux equivalent), but if you have many drive mappings to a single server, you will probably need to increase your IRPStackSize on the server. Default is 11 I believe, or 15. Setting this in increments of 3 will eventually allow the connection, but requires the server to be rebooted each time, and you can't go above 50.

I've tried everything in that thread and all others. I am assuming this is a permissions issue however as I stated, I have configured to the service to run under that same account that I log into the server with and can access the shares with no issues. Unfortunately the log file doesn't seem to provide any information.

Other suggestions?

As I stated above, I have tried using the mapped drive i.e. d:\Music mapped to '\\192.168.1.3\e\Music' and also the UNC path, as listed in the log file: '\\192.168.1.3\e\Music', both produce the same result. I doubt IRPStackSize is a factor as I've only got 2 drive mappings to external resources.

It's difficult to understand why this won't work for you without being able to examine your system. I have 4 instances of Subsonic running on Server 08 R2 and all are accessing network storage on a different server using UNC shares.

e.g. \\Servername\Music

Try using the Administrator account for the service permissions that Subsonic uses on the server. Make sure that Administrator/Password are the same for the server and the non-local drive you're trying to access.

Final thought. When you say non-local drive, are you talking about a NAS drive or something else that may be using a different file system than NTFS? That can certainly cause problems. If the non-local drive uses a different file system you would have to research how to read that as a UNC share on Windows. One night I spent a few hours setting up Samba on a Linux box so it could read my storage server and it was not what I would call fun.

Non local drive refers to a drive mapped to a shared folder on a Windows 7 Ultimate box. Both NTFS.

I have tried both UNC path and mapped drives with the same results. On the Win7 box I have provided Full Access to Everyone to the shares so there should be no authentication issues at all. I am able to mapd drives and access the UNC path to the MediaHub without having to enter any credentials so I don't think this is an authentication issue either.

OK - last question: You are entering the Foldername in Subsonic Settings/Media folders in the format,

\\Servername\Music

with the folder holding subfolders so that it looks similar to

\\Servername\Music\Artist\Album\Tracks

?

Usually when I put the Media folders into Subsonic I open the file explorer and select Network which then displays my servers. I click on my storage server and it then displays the available shares on that server. Once I select the proper folder I just cut and paste the UNC share path into Subsonic. If your doing this from the Subsonic host machine and your logged on with the same credentials that you assigned to the Subsonic service - I can't hink of any reason why it wouldn't be seeing the share.

I also use the verifier when I enter the logon into the service. Open the service properties, log on tab, This account, then use the Browse button and do the Check Names to verify accurate credential entry.
