Recently added material won't play.

Postby jamburglar » Fri Jan 25, 2013 6:35 pm

Problem Description: Newly added material shows up in list (complete with album art, etc), but does not play. When I attempt to download it, I get this message (in Google Chrome): "Error 6 (net::ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND): The file or directory could not be found."

Troubleshooting Steps: Restarting my computer/the Subsonic service did not help. I have tried selecting "scan media folders now", to no avail. I have tried unchecking the watched folder, selecting Save, "Clean-up database", Refresh, "Scan media folders now", Refresh -- again, to no avail. What did help: moving my entire music directory to another drive, and then moving it back to the original drive (and rescanning) -- only then did the newly added material play in Subsonic. However, any material added to the watched folder after the move exhibited the same problems (still would not play).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Playback Application and version: Standard Subsonic web interface, or iSub.

Subsonic Version: 4.7 (build 3106) [September 12, 2012]

Server Version: jetty-6.1.x, java 1.7.0_11, Windows 7 (180.6 MB / 187.4 MB)

Hardware Platform: Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)

Java Memory Limit: 250MB

Uninstalling and reinstalling Subsonic didn't fix the issue. Weird.

Check the file permissions on the newly added folders to make sure that the user account that Subsonic is running as has permission to access the files.

Thank you so much -- it turned out to be a file permissions issue.

I have learned over the years that it is almost NEVER a good idea to MOVE files around in windows, especially if they start out in your desktop, My Documents, or other "profile" folders.

You are almost always better off copying the files to their new location and deleting the old copy once you are sure they have been copied correctly.

Moving files in Windows from folder to folder does NOT reset the file or folder permissions to match the new location... I have always thought that it would be cool to write a Windows Explorer extension that monitors moved files and asks you "The permissions on the destination folder do not match this file's permissions. Would you like the permissions to be set to inherit from the destination folder?"

In all of my "spare time."

Glad to help,

Glenn

Very good to know -- I have essentially been moving my music from a disorganized folder to an organized folder via MusicBee. I will try copying the files instead and see if that gets rid of the pesky file permissions issue.

Thanks again, that was driving me absolutely crazy.
