new flac album not found

hi all.
added a few albums today...2 have shown up fine (mp3 format) the other (flac) is a.w.o.l.
after i added the flac album to the drive i did a 'scan media folders now' from the settings page it showed up briefly in 'recently added' with no cover art. i added the cover art, it was successfully downloaded, and i went back to 'recently added'. no album. it doesn't show in 'recently added', it doesn't show in the main list on the left, it doesn't show in a search.
tried scanning the media folders 5 times...still nothing. there's nothing wrong with the flac files as they play fine in other media players (using smb) and i can see them via sftp. linux box...not that this should make a difference.
have many, other, flac albums that work fine.
stumped.
anyone any ideas?

Touch the files to change the date and then try again...

nope...that didn't work.
tried a

touch -c ./*/

and

touch ./*

which set all dates/times to right 'now'. still nothing after a full scan...

this morning i deleted the album from the media drive and uploaded it again.
it shows up. without album art...again. i downloaded the album art...the album remains but the cover doesn't show.
weird.
would like to know what's happened here but am not going to tinker...will just leave it as-is.
