Help with Subsonic

Postby belomeclone » Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:49 am

I recently got a Nexus4, and I don't trust Google Music, so I'm interested in Subsonic. I am debating what to go with, as I do turn my PC off from time to time.

Should I simply know to leave my PC on when I want to use Subsonic on my phone? Or should I look into some kind of alternative hosting device? Like a NAS? Or a NAS-sized server? Is that even possible?

I'm just looking for some feedback. I cannot carry much music with me at the moment due to Google not allowing external storage, but their loss is your gain. Any help would be appreciated!!

I personally leave my home computer on all the time and always access my music through subsonic, either web interface or phone app. I also have too much music to be able to physically store it on my phone anyway. Subsonic is a great service. I highly recommend.

And I set up a small personal server using a throw away computer. And others bought NAS's to setup Subsonic on. You will find people who have done all 3. The only caveat is that with NAS you will have to figure out how to install Subsonic yourself. No one is going to offer you support and people may or may not be willing to help you as they are generally a pain in the butt ;)

If you are turning off your computer to save power though, it will probably be many times cheaper to just leave the computer on instead of buying a NAS and leaving that on all the time. The NAS takes less power, but you will be having that on all of the time + your main computer on a lot of the time + the upfront cost of the new hardware. I only setup a separate server because there was functionality that I wanted (not having to do with Subsonic) that necessitated a separate server and I had spare parts laying around.

Have a look over in the tutorials forum as a number of users have SS running on lots of different devices/Nas boxes.
One thing to to consider is if you want to stream video you will need a device with quite a bit of "horsepower" to handle transcoding.
For audio only almost anything will do providing it can run java.

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.
