genre tag

After installing Music cabinet, all my music is missing the genre tag. Is this an easy fix? Do I just do a new scan and let it do its thing or is this something that I am going to have to manually fix? I have almost 300 gigs of MP3 music, so that will take a long while unless someone knows of an easy way to tag...

just to add a bit more.. I have installed "puddletag" on my ubuntu box and all the genre tags are there, but subsonic no longer sees them?

If you press the magnifying glass without entering any text, that brings you to the "Advanced search" page. If you search for "Track genre" here, doesn't it return expected results?

yep, it actually does. So I take it that when I click on a an album and choose tags, it is supposed to be empty? I bet because of this being empty, DSUB (my android player) is not going to work on genre's..

Those are two different bugs (even though related). I had only tested the random songs feature with iSub which uses a different way of searching for random songs by genre. I'll have to add support for that for DSub too in an upcoming release, it's a pretty simple fix, I just hadn't noticed before that it didn't work.

awesome, thank you for taking a look... love music cabinet for the interface side, but I listen to most of my music from my phone... was hoping to find a fix...

Since you reported two bugs at once, I made a quick attempt to support the random genre option from DSub. I can't really test it right now but if you want to, you could replace your current subsonic.war with http://dilerium.se/musiccabinet/24d/subsonic.war (or http://dilerium.se/musiccabinet/24d/subsonic-tomcat.war for Tomcat) and restart your service. It might work better and it might work worse, it's on your own risk.

replaced the old war with the new one, restarted the server and now the screen gets stuck on "Shuffle list is loading".

Odd, there is only one way to get random songs by genre that I am aware of. Do you know how they do it?

grr I have to actually test using DSub then, I just coded blindly and checked the xml output. sorry!

iSub does shuffling by music folder and I've replaced the music folder list with the list of genres that the user has configured for the tag cloud. so it's a bit of a hack.

Oh, so iSub doesn't do global shuffling with the getRandomSongs method? I just use this method and I literally use (or at least give the option for the user to use) every field, including genre.

so, the normal subsonic only shuffles by folder also, and that is why I paid for Dsub, as there are days where I want to listen to Screemo, and then there are days that some nice classic rock is what I need. Dsub is the only player I found that can do the genre....let me know if you need anything from me on the user side....

From the library tab, you can select folder and choose between genres (if you've configured genres from Settings -> MusicCabinet -> Tag settings). After choosing a genre, you can press "Genre radio" which is kind of a magic album that you can refresh to get a playlist of popular tracks by artists related to said genre. It's not exactly the same thing as shuffle by genre but fairly similar.

yep, I know about the tag settings in Music Cab and the radio... use that at home, but on the road with my phone, I don't believe I can do that....

have you tried it on your phone on the road? go to the library tab in DSub, choose the media folder drop down list, choose a genre from it...
