Introducing Subsonic Premium

Postby sindre_mehus » Sat Apr 13, 2013 7:21 am

Dear all,

This is to inform you of an upcoming change in the Subsonic license scheme.

Starting with Subsonic 4.8 I'm moving away from the donation-based model in favor of a proper premium product offering, called Subsonic Premium. It will be subscription-based, at $1 per month. Like before, the basic version of Subsonic is free, but a Premium license is required to use certain features.

Please note that all existing licenses will still be valid forever.

I'm putting the finishing touches to Subsonic 4.8 now and hope to release it soon. At the same time, the Subsonic Android app will become ad-free again.

I welcome your comments!

Thanks Sindre! I look forward to Subsonic 4.8. I'm hoping that I will finally be able to use VLC again as an 'external player with playlist' - since moving to HTTPS with a valid purchased certificate properly installed and all, I cannot use VLC anymore. It's really a drag, but hoping you'll do some testing with VLC and HTTPS of your own. If you need an environment to test against, once again, I offer up my site to you. I'd love to work together on it, as the code within VLC is extremely unlikely to change, and there is something about HTTPS that just won't play nice there despite the valid cert and all. I've sent you some log details via PM as well.

In any case, thanks once again, I for one will be happy to donate yet again if I can get VLC working.

sounds great to me.. subsonic is worth way more than that imo, especially if it keeps getting better!

would you make an option to pay a couple years right off the bat?

thanks Sindre!

Glad to hear that - thanks!

Yes there will be two payment options, either a yearly recurring fee, or you can pay for 1-10 years upfront.

Thanks Sindre,

I think this makes a lot of sense as it respects previous users loyalty and represents good value for new users.

I'm looking forward to 4.8!

Is there a feature list available for 4.8?

Thank you Sindre!

sounds pretty fair for me, paying $1 per month for something I'm using all the day! :D
Looking forward for the next release,

So Subsonic Premium just unlocks the features that used to come with a donation? But it's a monthly (or yearly) cost?

I was happy to donate to Subsonic before, and I'd be happy to just pay for each new version as a way to get all of the features. However, charging a monthly fee for something that I'm hosting and administrating hardly seems appropriate.

Did you read the first post?

Please note that all existing licenses will still be valid forever.

Hi there,

I've read the first post but I am not sure what it exactly means.
Please note that all existing licenses will still be valid forever.

Does it mean

a. all existing licenses will still be valid for all upcoming releases of Subsonic
or
b. all existing licenses will still be valid with all versions of Subsonic prior to 4.8

I would be fine with both options because I think Sindre is free to decide as he likes to.
But I want to be shure if upgrading to 4.8 is safe or not for my existing license.

Please clarify

Yours Celindir

If the man says that existing licenses are valid forever, I don't see any ambiguity there.

Forgive my density, but this seems pretty simple and straightforward.

What am I missing?

"Valid forever" would seem to be difficult to misinterpret, unless you intentionally want to alienate your user base.

I'll take the statement at face value and not overthink this issue.
