artists still not sorting alphabetically in 4.8

As I suggested many times in the past and in this thread:

Don't put the tracks in the Artist root. Follow the suggested format:

X:\Music\Artist\Album\Track

If you have singles tracks for an Artist, just create a singles folder under the Artist folder and put the single tracks inside or create a folder that is the same as the name of the single for each track to reside inside. That would look like X:\Music\Artist\Tracksinglename\trackname.mp3

OR

e.g. \\MAPLEGROVE\Music\Music\Lana Del Rey\Young And Beautiful (CDS)\Young and Beautiful.mp3

I've also been in the habit of making sure that my folder naming matches my tagging and have NEVER had any sorting problems with my library no matter which version of Subsonic or any of it's forks I have tested.

Ahh... never mind ... don't listen to anything I say... I don't know what I'm talking about... my site works... how could I understand what you are going through???

Gary J we all understand you. However, that is NOT a solution it is a workaround. We already have our music organized correctly except for the single non-album tracks that are in the artist root directory.

We don't want to reorganize gigs and gigs of music that were previously sorted correctly by Subsonic v4.6 and below.

A solution would be to fix the code.

This is a USER forum. I moved all my sites to Madsonic months ago.

Sindre is the sole developer of Subsonic and rarely interacts with this forum any more. He is the only one who can modify the Subsonic code. All other modifications to the base code are done on the various forks.

Sort MediaFile Folder Selector
Sort files by filenames

Use own Genre for Tagedit
Enable Default Artist Cover
Enable HTML5 Videoplayer instead of Adobe FLASH
Enable Mediatype Quickedit Controls (only for Adminrole)
Enable for Subsonic Premium Services (License needed) or use own Domain sharing.

The above options are available on the Settings/Genreral page in Madsonic.

He's got so many options for how to sort I can't tell you what would work best for your structure. I've never had any of the problems other experience because my structure has always been fine under either method. You could send him a PM to see what he thinks, but I've not seen any complaints on the sorting issues over in the Madsonic forum which tends to make me think this is an issue he's addressed.

Madsonic also has a ton of additional features added that many have asked for. Send me a PM if you'd like a live preview on my site to see if it's something you might like to try.

You can always make a backup of your C:\Subsonic directory or the directrory where the other OS's besides Windows stores the db, install Madsonic and test to see if it works the way you want. If it still doesn't solve your issue you can still revert to Subsonic and just restore the backup of the original db.

It's probably best to start with a clean install with the latest Madsonic as he's made a lot of changes that I'm not sure will just install over the stock Subsonic directory any more. His Android app is really slick as well allowing as many as 10 sites to be defined. This is a huge plus for me as I often have several sites active at once plus access to other users sites that have given me account on their site. 10 feels about right in my case.

There are all kinds of other things that have been done to improve the whole user experience. It's really worth trying.

I submitted a bug on the Subsonic SF bug tracker, so hopefully this'll catch Sindre's eye now.

Fangs404, it won't get fixed. It was a change in the code and it no longer sorts by your file structure.

Either rollback to 4.6, or just use the workaround and create a "single_tracks" folder inside each artist folder so that those tracks appear as an album to Subsonic.

Switching to Madsonic might solve this as well but I haven't had a chance to switch yet.

It's because that's what everybody was whining about - that Subsonic didn't use id3 tags to do the sorting like other music apps. So then Subsonic gets modified - then everybody whines that it doesn't sort by folder/filenames.

Damned if you do/damned if you don't!

If you're only interested in music playback I'd recommend using version 4.5 It was very stable and functional for music. That will sort by the old method.

Too bad Sindre has not implemented a customizable sorting/naming scheme in 4.8. I am quite disappointed that the individual artists on my compilation albums stay 'Various Artists, that is really not helpful.

The individual tracks should at least be found when searching for the artist, now a search for an artists will not retrieve all tracks.

Madsonis solves this?
