Streaming from Subsonic to VLC via Network Stream

Postby f7n » Thu May 23, 2013 1:57 pm

Hey, as per the title, I'd like to stream videos from Subsonic to VLC. I've got the Subsonic server setup, and I can watch movies from my seedbox through the Subsonic WebGUI, however, I'd like to use VLC to watch these movies. Usually, I'd use VLC's network stream (Ctrl+N), but I'm not sure which URL from Subsonic I'd use. Is this even a feature?

Thanks.

You want to create a new 'Player' as its called in Subsonic, and instead of it being a 'web player' make it an External Player with Playlist, save it with the name VLC or something, and then use that Player when wanting to view or listen with VLC. You can make it more automatic by telling your OS to always open files of type "X" with VLC, also some browsers allow you to set the same sort of thing (reference Firefox), etc. One big caveat with VLC is that it won't handle HTTPS (SSL) based streaming well, but if your Subsonic server is just using normal HTTP, you should be fine. Good luck.
Subsonic 5.2.1 on 2009 Apple XServe w/ Yosemite Server 10.10.5; 96GB RAM. Lots of Music - High Rez, native DSD streaming, and otherwise.

Hey, thanks for the response. I've experimented with this new Player option, however VLC just stalls and nothing happens. The Players appears on the web page, but nothing happens and the 'play' button is greyed out.

Like you said, I'm sure this has something to do with my server using HTTPS. Is there a way to change it to HTTP? I guess that would also solve the ominous security warning every time I log in.

Thanks.

This is what I want to do:

Create a playlist of video files.
Open this playlist in VLC external from the browser
Play the video files.

I cannot do any of these. Are video playlists not supported? Can .mkv files not be played by subsonic with VLC? I can play music fine with an external VLC, but video just does not work. Please help!

Got VLC to play video by using this video transcoder: 'ffmpeg -i %s -f avi -b 3000k -' Change '3000k' to control bitrate.

It's not possible to seek at the moment and subtitles aren't working with VLC streaming. I'm working on it though.
