No, it just makes rendering the pages which use the thumbnails that much slower as it then have to get the full size album art, re-size it, and then present it

Not 100% certain on this one, but I recon it's the different thumbnail versions ( 70 pixels, 110, pixels, 140 pixels ) which are used in different pages.
E.g. in the start-page when showing random, newest, etc.. it's showing albums with the smallest thumbnail. When you are browsing the folders in your music directories you are presented with larger thumbnails. When you are playing music and showing the "Now playing" page, you are presented with the full-size ( or largest thumbnail ).
