The new icon

Postby williamkray » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:37 am

Hey guys, I'm the guy who designed the new icon, and from the comments in the forum, it seems pretty unanimous that it's not exactly winning any beauty pageants. I'd just like to say that I've come up with another icon and sent it to the dev for feedback, and I plan on getting other people's feedback as well.

While there was nothing wrong with the old icon, I just felt that DSub had grown so much as an app thanks to the tireless work of the developer, it deserved its own icon, its own identity. I didn't know how else to support the app (besides buying it) since I don't code, so I thought giving the app a new unique identity would be a way of giving back.

In the spirit of open source, I plan to upload the files I created the icon with, along with the new concept icon, for anyone to use, modify, completely redraw, or print out and burn in effigy. If someone can come up with a better icon than me, I applaud your superior skills and look forward to seeing your work on my phone.

In the mean time, you'll all just have to wait because I'm writing this on my phone, and i've got a busy day tomorrow. But I just wanted to put my thoughts and ideas out there somewhere.

I couldn't sleep, so I busted out the ol' laptop:

As promised, here is a link to various incarnations of different logos, the most recent are titled drawing11.svg and drawing12.svg; some are absolutely hideous, some are better, some I think are quite good (although we saw how that turned out, didn't we?). Feel free to download, tinker, and share with the community. These files are all SVG, an open source standard format for vector images. they are viewable in a browser, and editable in most vector editing programs. They were created in inkscape.

I'm open to recommendations and constructive feedback. Of course, this isn't my app, so I'm not really the guy in charge anyway :) daneren2005, please feel free to lock or delete this thread if i've overstepped my bounds.

I didn't see any comments about the icon and honestly, I thought the new icon was fine. I do have one comment which is for daneren2005 which is that I thought replacing the "play button" icon in the notification bar with the app icon was not a great idea. I prefer my notification bar clean and monochromatic although I do have some other apps also sticking their colourful icons up there sometimes also.

Yah I'm not a fan of that icon. I don't like the orange much. And @mr_nobody look at the all reviews. I got about 10 review commentating on it in one day. It wasn't on the forums though. And yeah I can change the notification one back easily

Thanks for your work on the icon. I think it's looks great and I'm surprised to hear people up in arms about it. I agree, DSub could use a more unique identity and I think the icon change is a great step. If I were to make a constructive criticism, I think the turquoise at the top doesn't feel like it fits. Is there some color you could replace it with?

Also, I did like the old notification icon. It worked well. :)

Some of those comments are pretty obnoxious. IMO people who make comments like that should either show us they can do better or stfu. Don't let it get you down, williamkray! :D

Personally, I love the new icon. Indeed any new icons in the future are also welcome. 8) Perhaps even use a reverse of the existing submarine, morprhed into a music note (periscope turned into a quaver flag)...and I love the idea of submerging it under water, but how to choose and contrast/compliment the colors? I leave that to the more creative..

I like the new icon, but as posted earlier I think the notification shade icon should stay as the play icon.

hello again. thanks for the kind words, perhaps rather than a complete overhaul, some modifications of the current icon are called for.... and with that, i've completely taken out the "sky" which adds a bit more of a unique silhouette, and added some curvature to the note flag to make it a little less harsh. the turquoise of the water is the same shade of blue used for secondary text from the app (with a bit of darker gradient added). I've also simplified the water surface to make it a little more readable as a tiny tiny icon on a phone screen.

this png and svg version are also still in the folder linked to in the first post, so feel free to download and modify these!

Just a thought.
Personally I prefer the old icon. Would it not be possible to put a switch in the program so you could choose which icon to use??

You can change the icon to anything you like in your launcher by long pressing and editing...

[Edit]: And I like the revised icon above though it's hard to tell until actually using it.

I think you can change your icon in most user-installed launchers like Nova or ADW or something like that, which is how i'm testing it out on my screen... but not so much the default launchers. and i agree, it's hard to tell until you're really using it if it will look good. the hardest part of this whole process is having something that looks good both large and teeny tiny. a lot tougher than i thought it was going to be!

There, I changed the notification icon back to the old icon. As for the new launcher icon I will look at the latest one you did will and see how it looks in the app.

All are cool, but I prefer the middle..having the yellow note contrast has a better 'branding' feel to it. Plus I love the waves being more distinguished. 8)
