Android app in Offline mode not scrobbling?

Postby Benji99 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 6:34 pm

Been testing out the Subsonic Android app.

It seems that if I'm in offline mode, and play music that I pinned on my phone, it doesn't get scrobbled to Last.fm.

I was hoping to use this mode to listen to pinned tracks while on the subway but I need the app to keep scrobbling.

Thanks!

Android Last.FM Scrobbling For Cached Songs

Postby mainadungo » Mon Jan 23, 2012 5:37 pm

When I listen to songs on my Android that I've listened to before, and thus are cached, they don't actually stream from my Subsonic server, so they don't show up in the "Now Playing" section, and they don't scrobble to Last.FM. Any thoughts or workarounds? I want all of my plays to scrobble, and would like my "Now Playing" to be accurate. Maybe there is a way to disable caching completely? Maybe that could be a sub-option under "only stream when connected to WiFi", so tablet users who only want to use WiFi (home streaming, etc) have that option?

I searched everywhere and couldn't find this topic, so I figured I would post. Thanks!

(and I'm sure this should be in a different place, but I'll just throw it out there- does anybody know if the "Now Playing" section is a feature that Android will ever have? All of my iPhone users have it, and the rest of us are very jealous. Thanks again!)

Excuse my ignorance on matters of an Android nature but if the device is offline, e.g. no connectivity with the outside world,
how is it supposed to access the last FM web site to update your profile :?
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, Image but some abuse the privilege!

Due to the confusion from too many genres of music, we have decided to put both country music and rap music into the genre of Crap music.

Well it can hold on to the updates until there is connectivity, if all you need is the play count to be correct - not the play time.

This happens to me when I’m online, not when I’m offline.

The reason is because Subsonic sees the music locally on the phone, and therefore doesn’t re-stream it from the Subsonic server, so the server doesn’t scrobble to Last.FM. The fix, in my opinion, would be to make the Subsonic app on the phone itself do the scrobbling.

Thoughts?

I agree, the same thing happens to me... Although I think that the right response is to have the android client cache the scrobble requests until reconnected with the same server.

If not I would suggest that probably the android server settings would each need their own scrobbling settings. I know I personally have two settings on my phone, one for my regular username and one for a different one with scrobbling disabled. The second one is used when listening to audio books or when the kids are in the car and I don't want Lady Gaga in my Last.fm list...

I think a more robust method is to be able to send some sort of "trigger" to the server which would contain scrobble information. This way the server handles everything, and the client-server model is not too damaged.

+1 here. I'm usually on a really crappy internet connection. I pin songs so I can listen to them with out stopping. Scrobbling while listening to cached songs isn't a problem.

In fact, the reason I got into Offline Mode is so I can see all the stuff I've cached. How adding another mode, or ability to filter on cached tracks only?

I'd really like to see this issue addressed. I can understand it not being a huge priority, but for us scrobbling enthusiasts its a bit disappointing.
