Subsonic Newbie, pls help!

I've just installed the iOS app and the server on my PC and specified the music directory.
All I want to be able to do is to stream my music via wifi to my ipad that's on the same wifi network. I don't want to stream via the net or by 3g etc.
Do I still need a xyz.subsonic.net address - I thought I just needed that for internet streaming?

Also, the IOS app will not work without this in the settings section (subsonic address, user, password) but the web control panel (Settings-->Netork) seems to suggest that streaming over the internet is optional!

I've read the user guide and it doesn't seem to mention this at all...

Can anyone please help?

LAN streaming can be done without the .org addy by simply using the server IP addy along with port. Still you would want a fixed IP addy on that server. Put that addy:port in the mobile app, of course it will only work when wifi enabled on the device. Cheers!
