Playing Video: Nexus10 + DSub + MX Player

Hi,

I am using a Nexus10 (4.2.2) with DSub 4.0.7 and MX Player 1.7.15a (ARMv7 Neon). It is the same setup, I am using on my SGS3 (4.1.1). On the SGS3 it works perfect, but on the Nexus10 I am not able to play Videos (AVI with XVID). The error messages i will get from MX Player is very generic (Videoproblems: Video can not be played). I have tried to play the videos with DSub and VLC. Same problem. But if I try to play the videos with BubbleUPnP and MX Player on the Nexus it will work. So I guess it has something to do with the link DSub (or Subsonic?) give to MX Player and some special differences between the SGS3 and the Nexus (or between 4.1.1 and 4.2.2). But I have no idea how to fix it... Has anybody some advice?

Did you mean something other then MX Player there, since that is what you are saying isn't working? Is MX Player just better then BubbleUPnP, or can you just you bubble? That does seem odd that one device can play it but not another. Maybe try messing with the hardware decoding options for MX Player?

with BubbleUPnP I can connect to my videos via UPnP instead of using subsonic. It also uses MX Player to play the videos, so - as far as i can see - it depends not on the decoding options for MX Player (that are the same as on my SGS3, that will play the videos!). nonetheless i have tried different settings...

One more information (maybe useful): Subsonic is not configured to transcode the videos. they will stream as pure avi.

my newest device is a android stick, which shows the same behavior. Any ideas anybody? Short aggregation:

MXPlayer and VLC plays all videos via UPNP or SMB share (via Solid Explorer). But if I try to stream via DSub or Subsonic App it won't work.

Same configuration (DSub and MXPlayer/VLC) on my Galaxy 3 (or the Galaxy 2 of a friend of mine) will work! Only difference - as far I can see - is the Android version. Nexus 10 on 4.3 (android Stick has 4.2.2). Galaxy S3 on 4.1.2.

Have tried all configuration settings but none of them will play the videos.

Would be great, if I am able to get it work, because UPNP or SMB will only work in the Intranet and not on the way...

Unforunately there isn't a whole ton I can do. DSub is literally just throwing a url at whatever player you use, and the player is doing the rest. Android seems to just suck at video. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot anyone can do to fix it. My best guess is that ffmpeg is pushing out video in a form that newer versions of Android don't understand for some reason, so compiling a newer version of ffmpeg might do the trick. But this is the main reason I haven't done more with video on the client, since what Subsonic puts out just doesn't seem to work with Android. If I tried to add a video player directly to DSub it would just have the same issues

just for reporting newest information:

I have upgraded my Galaxy S3 to Android 4.3, have installed DSub and MX Player / VLC again and have configured them in the same way as in Android 4.1.2. Now I can not play any videos anymore. Then I have changed form Subsonic to Madsonic without any success (have not really expected a success, but...). So Subsonic or ffmpeg has definately a problem with android-version > 4.1.2.

Have also upgraded the Nexus 10 to Android 4.4, but the problem still stands. This increases the problem, because in 4.4 you can not install flash player (as far as I know), so you are not able to play videos via the browser / flash.

By the way: mkv will play without transcoding, but no audio. with avi (also no transcoding) I will receive the error-message, I have described in the first post.

I would appreciate any further ideas...

I appreciate all of the Subsonic team's hard work and have enjoyed using the software for the last couple years (iPhone/Android). Unfortunately I'm still having trouble with streaming video from a remote machine running subsonic. Would it be possible to try implementing support for an Android video player that has better network streaming instead of MX Player?

I don't limit what player you use to play like in the main app where it is hard coded. I just pass a video intent and you should get an option of which video player to use (unless you have previously set MX Player to the default).
