Quite a nice update here, especially concerning the "Play next" button. I appreciate that.
But really, when playing a song, queuing all the album in the playlist? Is there really such an use case? It's so annoying, there was already the "Play all" feature to do so. At least, I would suggest to make those heavy changing in user experience configurable in the settings panel.
Also, album covers are not sorted in the same order than the list.

EDIT:
And why putting the name of tracks in italic? It just make it more difficult to read :/

I'm a new Subsonic user, and immediately noticed the lack of Genre searches. I'm happy to see that it's coming. One question, though...

Most of my tracks have multiple genre's listed, like this: Pop/Rock; Folk; Singer-Songwriter. Will Subsonic automatically split them off and recognize them as separate genres (as my Squeezebox Server does), or will it assume that it's a single lumpy genre (as iTunes does)?

I decided to try the beta, and my concerns were justified: The compound genre lists are not split. Is there any chance that this feature could be augmented to accommodate this?

Additionally, the droplist is not sorted alphabetically.

Hi Sindre

Great stuff - looking forward to the new release. I'll try the Beta on my Raspberry Pi over the Xmas break.

Out of curiosity, did you pick up on the clipping issue from this thread: http://forum.subsonic.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8819&p=59292&hilit=clipping#p59292

If so, I wondered if you took the same approach to gain as I did in my own fix - i.e. making it behave like Shairport/Airplay? I didn't get around to posting my modified source (mainly because I didn't test it on different platforms and I didn't want to lead people astray) but I can do if you're interested?

Steve.

What is the rationale behind this change?

Could this become a configurable option?

I prefer the original behavior where it cleared the queue, added the one song, and started playback.

Often when I'm browsing music, I end up in an album's track list. I think to myself, "Yup, that's the one I want!" and I want to start playing the album. It's rare that I would want to play a single track. Instead, I want it to cue up the entire album, and start playing the song I clicked (preferably with that song listed in it's proper album order, which might be in the middle somewhere).

The Logitech Media Server has this feature, called "Play Other Songs In Album", with the choices of:

  • Play only selected song
  • Play other songs in album or directory

The web interface (at least in the latest beta) has a "Play All" button above the track list, which essentially provides the desired functionality, so the "play all when I tell you one" feature would be redundant there

However, this "Play all" feature isn't in Subsonic Music Streamer (and perhaps other clients as well). I'm not sure if it would be appropriate for the server to assume all players would want this to happen. In Subsonic Music Streamer, you always perform two steps: build your playlist, then play it. There doesn't appear to be an option to "Add and Play" as a single step. It's in that instance where adding all the songs in the album would make the most sense, and that situation doesn't appear to exist. ;)

Many decent players do this. The idea is to automate the most frequent tasks, and many still listen to entire albums. The logic also extends that if you prefer to manually build a playlist, simply clear the current playlist (2 clicks) and begin your search/build playlist process, which is all manual anyway.

Question: Is the automatic album art generated on the fly every time it is displayed? I see Java resources spiking tremendously every time a page with album art is loaded

Yes (but it will be cached in the browser).

I'll do some profiling and see if I need to add server-side caching for this.

Thanks

Can't find any example videos on there, and the example streaming tv doesn't work. Tips?

I also like the MB status for each user in the Home/User tab...but is there a way to reset it? so I can set everyone back to zero and see what they stream/down/upload in a week, month, etc... until I choose to reset it again? or does it reset if I reboot the server?

thanks

I don't necessarily mind this new functionality, I will have to adapt. Its a habit I've formed over the last 2 years of using Subsonic.

I'm glad Sindre ditched the funky context menu on the '+' symbol (queue next/last from earlier betas).

Have to agree with the fact that its un-needed. Nice feature but should be an option. I think if someone likes an album alot usually they play all and remove the un-needed songs. Problem is I cant remove it because now everything is indexed differently.

Looks like a big change in the background from what I can tell. -- Keep up the good work Sindre.
