Surely this is simple..setting up for just wifi connection

Postby Toeem » Wed Feb 05, 2014 8:46 pm

HI
Gotta be straightforward and cant easily see an answer...or even a FAQ

I have installed relevant software on home PC
I have installed dsub on android
I want to connect just over my home network with wifi
so i can listen to music on my tablet or phone just at home....

or am i missing something???
does my music have to go via the internet(to put it in simple terms)
to get from my PC to phone????

another quick query...
does it cache the files while playing and then delete them when finished or will it slowly store all the media files i play onto the device im listening on??

Thanks in advance

Tony

Of course it works as you want. To ensure streams remain lan-only (some routers are flakey), simply use your server IP/port as 'home' server. (eg. http://192.168.1.14:4040).

Edit: it will store up to cache limit. Set it low to keep room on the device.

OK thanks.....?
You make it sound so simple...
I'll take a look through set up pages and see how I get on..
This is the bit that surprises me, why is all this not automated...?
I consider myself pretty computer savvy so god help any novices with this..
Thanks again for help..

Primarily due to the myriad ways/hardware that Subsonic can be installed. For Windows, the best tutorial is in our Tutorial section:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4867
Cheers!

edit: 'Put SubSonic PC on static IP' is the apt section, then make a 'Home' server on the client with that IP/Port, and usual log-in creds.

Hope I can sort,...
To put this into perspective...
I searched for a streaming app etc...
And found 'plex'..
Which installed and was a piece of cake to set up..
The only initial problem that wound me up was how I couldn't create a play list or add to now playing.
Things that surely as a media player should be pretty high up on their features list..
So I started the search again and read some things about subsonic.. Sounds great.. And seems to cover all the basic features that I consider a media/music player should have.....
So I install hoping for a smooth and easy ride..
'it's never easy'... As I say to my apprentice every day..

Excuse my rant.. Here's looking forward to a great piece of software..

Thanks again for help

I believe you will find it worth the trouble. I use Plex too, and everything requires a bit of configuration effort. I've requested the one of the most problematic issues, NAT Traversal, many times, but we can only hope. :)

by the way ...
"NAT traversal"
neither me or my dad have the faintest idea what that is...
is it anything to do with playing music from one device to another in the same house......

sorry for sarcasm......its late im frustrated..

Sorry no..NAT Traversal is unrelated.

Do you have a static IP assigned to the server machine? (iow, is 192.168.1.14 fixed using the server machines' lan settings? It should NOT be dhcp..)

again no idea what your on about......

seems to me that you need to know a fair bit about setting up
ip addressees, port forwarding, accessing your router config etc ....

which surely i shouldnt need to know

install the software...
install the app....
go.....

how is someone who knows nothing about these things ever going to use this software....

ok i succumbed to just going the obvious route and filling in a user name and going through the subsonic host..
which all ran smoothly..
so its obvious thats the way they want you to do it...
so questions..
1... am i right in thinking my media files are uploaded through their servers and then back down to my android ?
2... does this therefore use up my available data allowance from sky?
3...is it eating up my available bandwidth

presumably they keep it simple this way and difficult the other (over wifi) so you have to use their server and therefore pay/donate
....this is the part of the software that runs out over thirty days??
or am I just being skeptical...?

I really dont mind paying just would like... not.... to get involved with uploading/downloading through external servers....

IF im completely getting this all wrong...please let me know...
thanks for any replies....

If the clients use only the lan IP/port I mentioned earlier you can be assured all traffic remains within your LAN . If you use the premium vanity URL most routers are smart enough to detect the local request and keep all traffic local, but some routers can pass the request to ISP, escaping your LAN. Any time you connect outside the home results in WAN traffic. Subsonic vanity URL ( 'friendly name') first heads to subsonic redirect server to translate your masked home server IP/port, and that is its sole purpose- access. No other data is transferred by or to subsonic redirect server.
